Governor Pennoyer yesterday pardoned John C. Bames.who was sentenced to the state prison on Febiuary 23, 1685, to serve a term of twenty ears for the crime of rape. Homes was commit ted from Multnomah county and his sentence was commuted upon the re commendation of fifty signers to a petition for his release. Barnes com mitted rape upon the person of his 10 or 11-jearold halt sister ine other commutation was grouted to Heubeu L.Gilchrest, sentenced troru Grant county on "May 21, 1891, to serve a term of two and a half years for the crime of arson. WCTHatOK! HARRISON INSTITUTE. Commencement Exercises Large Number of Visitors Present. The number of visitors yesterday at the commencement at the Insti tute was larger than was expected. Flowers and evergreens tastefully intermingled, gave the platform a clieerful appearance. Over the en trance hung the class motte: "Reach Un as far as You Can: God Will Reach Down the Rest of the Way." Rev. G. M. Irwin opened the ex ercises by prayer and un address to the graduating class. He was fol lowed by the graduates, who were: Oliver Lindsey, of Idaho; Agnes Whitley, Martha Wasliumps, Jose phine Allurd, of the Souud; Robert Wilson, Warm Springs reservation; Joseph Adams, of Silatu; James Flanuery, of Alaska; trunk Low cry, of Rogue river; William Miller, of California; Adda Irwin, of Salem. The essays and recitations of the graduates were of a high order. One of the nicest features of the af ternoon's entertainment was the extraordinarily good instrumental and vocal music rendered by the students. Another tiling of iuterest wits' the class drill by the little girls of the school. After the last number of the after noon programme had been rendered the visitors were invited into the school building, where industrial ex hibits of all kinds and of superior merit were to be seen. The work was done by the students and theie u'dapvervthlnu? from the finest ol embroideries and crochet woik to laif.o well-built farm wagons and buggies, Tlio art exhibit consisted of some excellent blackboaul work of pen manship and fieeliand drawing. Iu auotlier place was exhibited clothiugmado by boys aud gills. One bov of 10 had made a pair ol trousers which would compare with any. There were shoes also which were made by the pupils und wero not lacking in quality or finish. J. Staiger, the head shoemaker, bus offered a prize for the best work, and the awards will be made us soon as possible. A Washington boy had on exhi bition a model of the boys' gymnasi um which it is proposed to build. Theappropiiation for that purpose haB been cut down to about 500. Two young ladies, noted for their cooking, exhibited severul cakes that would do credit to any pastrymaker. Several sets of especially good harness were there for iuspectlou. There was un exhibit of tinware nf excellent workmanship which I...H ! on iihuIk in the school. Nu merous other pieces of work showed that all repairs ntedtd on tho im mense furm could be made by Hit studeuts.
