Tho largest olivo orchard in tho world belongs to Mr. Ellwood Coopor, of Santa Barbara county, California. Mr. Cooper purchased the land occu pied by this mammoth grovo of ori ental trees away back in 1871, tho entiro orchard, including tho portions of it which aro devoted to tho culture of English walnuts, Japanese persim mons, almonds, etc., comprising 1,700 acres. Tho orchard now has 10,000 olivo trees, 8,100 in full bearing, the romaiudor being young trees set out during tho past year and a half. Be sides tho olivo trees, thero aro 3,000 English walnut tree3, 4,500 Japaneso persimmon trees, 10,000 almond trees and about 4,000 other fruit and nut trees. Tho 10,000 olivo trees yielded 40,000 quart bottles of olivo oil in 1891. St. Louis Republic. Flying lrIvo Kites Together. On May 9, 1891, at Bergen Point, N. J., I sent up five kites, from two to f our feet in diameter, all held by ono string at tho surfaco of tho earth. It is therefore clear that tho number of kites to bo flown is limited only by tho strength of tho string, ite length, and tho force and steadiness of the wind. Tlio doath of a Mr. Catty in London has called to mind tho amusing trick that was played on tho London Times years ago. This o1 ituary notico appear ed in Tlio Times: Died, on the 1st '-tat., Mr. Magog Catt, of tho town clerk's oRke, Guildhall. Sincerely re gretted. Now Magog Catt was a beautiful and well known tabby called Magog, at tached to tho town clerk's office Magog laid departed this life. Tho Mr. Catty who has just died was tho head J clerk in tho office, and hundreds of peo ple who read tho notico of Mr. Magog Catt's death confounded tabby with tho head clerk, and condolences bogan to pour in. Many pcoplo called to inquire what caused Mr. Catt's sudden demise Others left cards without inquiry. Many letters of sympathy, applications for tho supposed vacant post and circulars from undertakers began to pour in. Monu ment makers addressed letters to tlio executors of tho "late Magog Catt, Esq." Tho joko coutinucd in various forms for wcoks, and "Magog Catt, Esq.," oven received touching memorial para graphs about his "services to tho cor poration" in tho provincial nowspapors. All thoso tributes wero carefully col lected and placed in a scrapbook, which is still in the Guildhall hi rary. Tho funniest feature of all this confusion was a letter from a gentleman of anti quarian proclivities who wrote that ho was compiling a work on curious nomen clature and inquiring if it was by acci dent or otherwise that an employee of tho corporation had been christened "Magog." E., by a Ghazi at Gullstan. It appears that tho former was out riding and was joined by tha Ghazi, who was also on horseback. Both entered into friendly conversation, and shortly afterward put their horses to a trial of speed, in which Lioutenant Rob ertson outstripped his rival, when tho Ghazi, being a short distance behind, suddenly drew his tulwar and inflicted a sevoro gash on Lieutenant Robertson's neck and otherwise wounded his hand, which ho had raised to ward off tha Ghazi's attack. Lioutenant Robertson was brought into Quotta and taken to tho station hospital, whero ho is at present being treated, and thero is every hopo of bin recovery. Tho young Ghnzi was nr rosted and brought into Quetta to bo identified by Lioutenant Robertson, and it having been proved conclusively that he was tho Individual who attacked him, ho was in consequence summarily tried, found guilty of an attempt to murder and sentenced to be hanged and his body afterward burned. The sontenco was carried into effect on Tuesday morn ing It is stated that when Lieutenant Robertson foil oil his horso and was ly ing ou tho ground bleeding profusely tho faithful animal protected his master from further injury by kicking at the Ghazi and attompting to bito him. But for this remarkable behavior on tho part of Lieutenant Robertson's horso, it is supiosed that the Ghazi would havo probably hacked Lieutenant Robertson to death.
