olllco oillclals of this city recoived
an Important tip from n local banker,
who said he had been asked to act as
agent of a concern opurating under
the name of tlio Louisiana Loan
and Trust Co., but which appears to
be tiie Louisiana lottery. A pros
pectus which was issued by tho con
cern, a copy of which has been se-
cured, mentions drawing for loans
and names a number of applicants.
It Is signed by J. F. O'Donnell as
president; D. M, Slocum, general
manager. It claims a cash capitol
of $1,600,000, and cencludes: "It is
the most popular financial and
money-loaning system in the
world."

Portland, Juno 1. Near the
close of the general assembly yester
day afternoon an amusing scene oc
curred upon tho introduction of a
resolution calling the attention of
ministers, ciders and studeuts to tho
evils of the tobacco habit. Each
stop of tho discussion was greeted
with roars of laughter. Finally,
however, tho resolutions wero passed
with a shout and waving of hats.
An Incident unusual in tho gen
oral assembly was tho taking of a
collection for the benefit of the col
ored nilnlBtor who was left stranded
after coming from North Carolina
to prosecute an appeal. Unsuccess
ful and moneyless, tho $110 realized
went far to console his wounded
feelings.
After passing a voto of thanks to
the moderator and clerks and tho
people of Portland, the 101th session
of tho general assembly was dis

Chicago, Juno 1. Republican
politicians are plenty at the hotels
this morning. Conference of lead
ers constantly is held. Emmons
Blaine, after a conference with
Clarkson, Conger and others de
clared he know nothing regarding
his father's intoutlons, though lie
admitted Blaine's silence seemed to
mean a good deal.
Senator Hauseborough, of Nortli
Dakota, has advices that five of tho
six delegates from his state are for
Blaine, and nil but two of the South
Dakota delegation who were in
structed for Harrleou hnvo gone
over to Blaine. But it now seems
probable Hon. Thomas Reed, of
Maine, will be temporary chairman.
Friends of Harrison were booming
him as well.
FIRE IN A MINE.
Fourteen Dead Already Found and
Soveral Injured.

in the Birkenberg silver mlue, near
Przibrag, Bohemli, and spread
through the whole Interior, cuttinir

file has been extinguished, rescuers
are at work aud have already
brought out fourteen dead and a
many Injured. Five hundred men
were at woik in the mine at the
time. All except forty escaped.
Bruner Will Bo Tried.
San Fuancisco, June 1. Judge
CohVy today rendered a deeialon In

wood Bruner, of Sacramento,
charged with offering to accept u
bribe during the session of the last
legislature to defeat tho "scalper
bill." Court held that the evidence
it had heard was sulllclent to war
rant the belief that Bruner waa

ingly held to answer.

Iowa's Contribution.
Rkia, Juno 1. Men wero set to
work discharging the' cargo of the
stoamer Tynchead, carrying Iowa's
contributions for the starving Ru&

opened, flour, provisions, etc, wero
loaded on Oars. The cargo made 310
carloads. These were run as express
trains, and as soon as loaded started
for the distressed provinces. Cap
tain, Carr, commander of tho Tyn

A Littlo Girl Breaks Her Neck.
SiitUUK, Wash., Juno 1. A sad
accident occurred the evening of
Decoration Day. Kueady Wallace,
a 7-year old girl, appearod with 200
other children in the line of pro
cession. On hor way home, fourteen
miles distant, and when seven miles
out from Sprairue, tho little girl fell
out of the wagon, breaking her
neck and backbone. She died iu

Martin as their principals. A flood

spection of the grain in store, to
gether Ylth sharp calls for margins,
soon put the firm in trouble, una
when ono bank refused to certify
the firm's checks the ofleriugs In
creased, aud amid a scene of the
wildest confusion in the pit the sell
ers ehouted offers on a descending
scaio till the price touchud 60 cents,
when it was announced that Coster
& Martiu had failed. Covering by
shorts at the bottom caused a reac
tion to 65 cents. There wero rumors
regarding tho solvency of otliei
flrmc, but no other names were
posted. There were all ports of wild
statements as to Coster & Martin's
liabilities, but it indefinitely known,
however, lu addition to the capital
required to carry through tho deal
up tidny, thoy needed $1,000,000
this morning to take care of the day's
receipts nud other offerings. There
was a minor that the firm in their
efforts to corner the market ran up

binder war broke out in the Chinese
quarter, and for a holf minute there
was perfect fusilade on Third street
