I know that the cowboy's unique posi
tion among Americans is jeopardized in
a thousand ways. Towns aro growing
np on their pasture lands; irrigation
schemes of a dozen sorts threaten to
turn bunchgrass sconory into farmland
viowsj fanners aro pre-empting valloys
and tho sides of waterways, and the day
is not far distant when stock raising
must bo dono mainly in small herds,
with winter corrals, and then tho cow
boy's day will end. Even now his con
dition disappoints thoso who know him
only half a dozen years ago. His breed
scorns to havo deteriorated, and his
ranks aro filling with men who "work
for wages" rather than for lovo of tho
freo lifo and bold companionship that
onco tempted men into that calling.
Splendid Choyenno saddles aro less
and less numerous iu tho outfits; tho
distinctive hat that mado its way up
from Moxico may or may not bo worn;
all tho civil authorities in nearly all tho
towns in tho grazing country forbid tho
wearing of sido arms; nobody "shoots
np" thoso towns any more. Tho fact is
tho old simon puro cowboy days aro
gone already, and when tho harbor Des

Tho demand for nnthracito has beon
subject to very considerable fluctua
tions, tho trado doponding upon tho gon-

othor industries must do; but its growth
has on tho whole been Remarkably
steady, for it has beon promoted by
threo groat causes whoso combined ac

tho nocessity for this fuel. These aro
tho increase in population, tho decreaso
in tho wood supply and tho decroaso in
freight rates.
Of courso theso causes affect tho trado
in bituminous coal as well, and tho com
parative cheapness of that coal ' causes
its production to grow moro rapidly than
tho production of anthracito; but tho
latter is so much tho hotter domestic

uses whore tho smolto and dirt that aro

Quinine Is Very Clican Now.
Porhaps no drug known to medicine
is moro generally used than quinino,
and cortainly nono presents such a wido
difforonco in prico as tho quinino sold
blx years ago and tliat sold now. At
that timo uoarly all tho cinchona bark,
from which it is extracted, was brought
from South America, subject to heavy
import duty. But tho duty was taken
olf, and this marked tho first big do
clino in prico. Before that timo it sold
for nbont 0110 dollar an ounce
Shortly after this English capitalists
concluded that tho bark could ho grown
in India as well as in South Amorica,
and largo plantations woro purchased.
Tho climato and soil suited admirably,
aud by scientiiio culturo tho ylold was

Wo claim that geology holds rank
with astronomy or biology. Tho fonnor
science tells us of tho existonco of othor
worlds than ours and gives us somo con
ception of tho immensity of spaco. Tho
study of plants aud animals carries an
impressivo lesson as to tho unity prevail
ing amid all tho diyorslty of naturo, bo
Bides affording tho hopo that wo may at
eoiuo timo discover tho origin of lifo,
Binco it has already openod tho way to
an explanation of tho origin of tho ex
isting forms of lifo, v?hilo tho grand
outcomo of geological study is that it
brings vividly boforo tho mind tho hn
mensity of timo, enabling us to realizo
that timo is only less than otornlty.
