Captain Whitehead stated to several gentle men who spoke to him in refer ence to the matter that ho had re ceived no orders other than thoso received at San Diego, ordering theui to proceed to Astoria to take part In tho celebration of the Columbia river centennial, and go from there to Portland if ho deemed It pru dent. Ho denied having received any ordors to the contrary. Tho rumor, however, that the Charleston had received orders to proceed to China Saturday, thus making it impossible for this war vessel to como to Portland, was thought best to be looked Into, and. upon inquiry Captain Plgney, of the Charleston, admitted that he had received ordors to proceed losea upon that day, whereupon Captain Popo, of tho centennial committee, and President Oaborn, of the cham ber of commerce, wero telegraphed tho information with suggestions that tho matter bo inquired into Im mediately from headquarters at Washington.
