'Ihe matter was dually referred to another special committee of five ministers aud four laymen. During the discussion Dr. Leonard deuouuied tbe president aud con gress, and said the Chinese had t lie fcame iitht here us other foreigners Dr Swindell said unless action was taken the couutry would regard the conference as approving the bill, than which a more iniquitous meas ure was never passed by congress. Dr. Edwards, of Chicago, de nounced tbe act as a political meas ure. The bill, said he, is a top to the steerage uow unloading iu Ni w York. It was rushed through the Democratic house, passed by cur uoblo senators, aud signed by our well nigh impeached president, solely for political ellect. Dr. Paine said the church shoti'd show it was not to bo couti oiled by any partisan bias. Tho conference should show it does not approve such a political measure, and moved to send the matter to a church com mittee. Mr. Buckley denounced all refer ence to patties, saying that the man who would try to build up one party or tear down auother in this confer ence was nothing but a demagogue.
