ing the legal question of whether or
not a buggy, a family vehicle,
purchased by the husband, is a
family expense for which the wife's
separate estate would lie liable, was
decided by the supreme court iu the
affirmative. The court deciding
that a buggy under the allegations
of the complaint as pleaded, if true,
constitute a family expense. It is a
pretty big expense in some families.

The state military board concluded
its business Tuesday night, but
formally adjourned to day. Con
siderable impoitaut business was
transacted, und Brigadiei-General
Compson became fairly well
acquainted with his coadjutors of
the board. He made a favorable
impression on all who met him here,
possesses a dignified bearing and
tins an experience as a soldier, added
to a commanding figure and level
head, Hint constitutes his appoint
ment an ideal one. His appolut
muutof Cipt. Mitchell, a son of tho
senator, as quarter-master on h's
stafF had u happy result at Salem for
the whole board never faied so well
sluce the O. N. G. was created.
Col. Wagner at tho Wallumette
served the gentleman meals and
lunches that were a credit to the
house and city, but to the new
quaiteriuaster belongs the credit of
numerous extras on the bill of fare,
as he was given carte blanche and
used it with the taste and skill of a
born master of supplies. TIip regi
mental officers at Salem gave the
board a banquet at Strong's Monday
night that was a rich affair.
Sr.KIOOS BUSINESS.
Col. Bowditch secured an appro
priation of $500 to equip for actual
duty troop B at Linvilie, who are
liable to be called out to defend the
the seltleis against the three thou
sand, Indians still on the reserva
tion. There is great danger of an
Iudiau outbreak there and the pres
ent state military board deserves
ciedit for doing nil iu its power to
protect the settlers.
Mills Meetings Closed. Every
nook and corner, every inch of space
on every railing and step was filled
Tutedsy night to hear Mr. Mills'
final address, Iu all some over 700
have signed cards signifying a desire
to become Christians. Individual
churches have had accessions of
membership of from eighty to 100.
Rev. Gwynne, D. D. spoke briefly
at the close and said that if Mr
Mills ever came to Salem again tho
Christian people here would build
him a tabernacle that would seat
from 3000 to 5000. There will be
services the remainder of tills week
in the several churches conducted
by the pastors.

Policeman Fined. On com
plaint of H. P. Mluto, Dee Gibson
was fined $5 and costs for an assault
ou C, W. Pugh. This was for tho
same offense that is charged before
Justice Batchelor as assault with a
dangerous weapon. Judge Goodell
says it will not affect tho mrlts of
that case, as that Is to bind the man
over to the graud jury.

one mill tax on a proper assessment
would bring into the city a tux of
$25,000. Those who talk of our
present high taxes say nothing of
low valuations. The present ex
pense of the city is about $20,000 a
year.

J. P. Blalzo, a real estate dealer
in Des Moines, Iowa, narrowly
escaped one of tho severest attack
of pneumonia while in tho northern
part of that state during the recent
blizzard, says ttio Saturday Review.
Mr, Blalzo had occasion to drive
