The pen sion office investigation took a de cidedly political cnstysterday after noon. En loo has been pursuing a searching Inquiry for a long time. Ho asked If the bureau was not used for political purposes. The commissioner said he never wrote a letter to the medical board of ex aminers requesting the performance of any political act, but if ho found examiners using their places to aid the Democratic party he would call them lu. In assigning to the field, he maKes it a point to know their politics. He denied more appoint ments were made in doubtiul dis tricts Just beforo election than at auy other time, or that more pen sions were grunted lu districts where votes were needed than where they wero not so muoh needed. Enloe asked If the office did not adjudicate claims most rapidly in close congressional districts. Raum denied this emphatically. April 1. A special to tho Bee from Nelsop yesterday says: A terrible cyclono struck Nelson this evening. It came from the southwest, and could be seen at leant ten minutes before it struck the town. It was preceded by a ter rlblo hailstorm, lasting several min utes, after wbioh came the storm, which proved the worst and most destructive that ever ylslted this section of Nebraska. The storm struck the town with terrible force at 8:15 p. ra. Many persons rushed into cellars and stores for safety. Tho damage bus beeii estimated at $100,000. Tho First National bank was un roofed, tho opera house block un roofed and badly damaged, the Union block uuioofed and the south west end torn out, the Arlington hotel unroofed, the new $18,000 school house almost destroyed, the Presbyterian church badly wrecked, aud a large number of residences wrecked, nothing biing left but cellars aud foundations. One-half of a house, that of Henry L. Pope, wns carried along in the truck of the storm nearly au eighth of a mile with Its contents nud Mrs. Pope und two children; fortunately, however, the family escaped uninjured. Mies Mary Drayton, assistant prluclpal of tho Nelson high school, Is tbo only ono who was seriously hurt, having a leg aud several ribs broken. It Is slnoa learned that Mrs. John Eaton was also seriously injured. Most of the buildings were insured against lire, nud the loss Is almost total. Efforts Will Soon Bo Made to Break It Up. Philadelphia, April 1. 8inco the sugar trust a few das ago ac quired control of all refineries in the country, steps have been tiken to arrest tbo threatened monopoly. Eflorts were made to build an inde pendent refinery on the Duicware river, near Sprekel's refinery, but thn projectors have not met with much success. They, therefore, start relief ln the preparation of a bill to repeal tho duty of half a cent per pound on refined grade of sugars, which they claim serves only as the purpose of allowing the trust to control absolutely the entire refinery trade of tho country. The draft of a bill It Is understood, Is already prepared by Sara Gustin Thompson, a friend of ex-President Cleveland, and gives rise to the impression that the bill is favored by Cleveland with the idea of forcing the Republican party Into the attitude of defending mon opoly, if they resist the passage of tho bill, as since the combination acquired coutrol of tbo business the price of refined sugar has advanced J cent per pound.
