OUt at Trinidad, Colo., Jnst south of tho town,' Is a huge, flat topped rock on the top of a bill perhaps 300 feet high. It Is called Simpson's rock, and It is one of tbo historical points in the west Indeed It Is a fragment of his tory from that time when heroic deeds, mado sacred by the spilling of whit man's blond, ushered in the safe and prosperous era of white man's rule. Simpson was a pioneer and came to the place before the namo of Trinidad was heard. He was a freighter, and finding many advantages about the ffpot he prepared a homo for his family on the bank of tho Purgatolre river. Ho had a wife and two boys in his homo at Santa Fe, and no man ever moro lovingly prepared a lodge for his love than this rough driver fashioned a dwelling in far away Trinidad. lie had everything in readiness as ho passed through to tho east, and meant to bring out his wifo nnd children on his next trip west. But tho Indians had risen that fall and swept all the settlements down the river. They found Simpson's homo Just ready for occupancy, cap tured tho men he had employed to take care of it, and then lay in wait without disturbing a thing till tbo owner should come. Simpson had seen signs of their rav ages, and knew tho knife and brand were devastating the country. He cir cled around his cherished home and saw enough to warn him. Hedrovo to the foothills south of tho river, and be gan preparations for a guarded camp. Tho Indians did not wait for barricades, but attacked at once. Tho helpers were slaughtered at tho first assault, but Simpson, with one canteen of waterf fought ills way through tho lino of screaming Utes and clambered up tho hill. They followed him as well as they could, but darkness favored him, and ho gained the hills. Next morning early they found him, and ho retreated a little further up tho bill, killing sov eral of bis assailants from a better cov er. In tho afternoon they drove him from that, and ho clambered a little higher up. So tho warfare went on. Ho had shot so many they would not Jeavo him alive, but they could not capture him. Tho second night Simp son retreated to tho very top of the hill, rolled up a shelter of stones in a spot where lie could command the one approach, and waited. He had eaten nothing, nnd could hope for no food. The only chance or deliverance lay in tho posaiblo coining of soldiers to avenge the massacre of settlers. Lying there in tho broiling sun by day and tho chilling air by night, tbo grim old man watched sleeplessly, picking off his enemies as they crept one by one up tho path. Day nfter day, for a week, without other food than cactus root, with no water than that one canteen full, ho stood oil his enemies. He never shot till ahead was in sight, and he always killed. Ten days, and ho prayed for death. Eleven, and ho lost his cart ridge belt. Ho found it, feebly crawl ing about his littlo fort, on tho evening of tho twclf til. Ho killed three Indians on tho thirteenth. In tho thick dark ness before tho dawn of tho fourteenth iie felt rather than saw an Indian nt tho path, and shot without a waver. Ho heard tho voiceless Uto roll down the precipice and pumped in another cartridge. That was his last. They found him so at noon, bis dead eyes wide open, ids rillo lying along tho rock, his pinched, heroic frumo starved for food and famished for water, so thin that thoy spurned it with their feet. For fourteen days ho had fought them, and then ho died defiant. Trinidad people have raked a cross to mark his grave and to perpetuate tho memory of tho most hopeless, tho most surprising fight in all tho Indian annals. Chicago Herald.
