"GOD BLESS YOUI" Tho phrase Is trite; tho insincere And heartless glibly uso It, And often hypocrites austere To aid their projects choose it; But when 'tis spoken from tho heart, Whllo griefs and cares oppress you. The sun appears, the clouds depart That common phrase, God bless you! Life often is a dreary road. Where thorns aud briers beset you, And while you stagger 'neath your load Small troubles sting and fret ou. It lights tho eye and dries tho tear. When all those Ills distress you. If from a friendly voice you hear Tho common phraso, God bless yon! And often when tho heart would speak Its Impulse sweet and tender. And other words nro all too weak Its meaning deep to render, Or gratitude, a medium seeks In which It would address yon, Then In tho phraso a volume speaks The common phrase, God bless you! Cape Cod Item. Mnboon nnd Itat. A curiosity In tho way of baboons ts offered out at tho zoological garden, tho naino of tho eccentric animal being Rocks. Until lately Rocks had the reputation of being a quite well behaved inhabitant of tho "zoo," but recently ho developed an astonishing love for rats, and in consequonco it is almost inipossiblo to keep tho place freo from tho infesting rodents. Tho baboon is fed on sweet potatoes, and it is cus tomary when mealtimo comes for him to break a. pieco off of a potato and throw It in a corner which ho knows is a den of rats, thus endeavoring to en tico them from their lair to become his playmates. When within his reach ho fondles them in his own burly manner, which is none too gentlo, nnd not knowing the frailty of tho littlo beast ho actually kills them with kindness. Finding tho diminutive rodent lifeless it ts Rocks' turn to mourn, and ho immediately seeks a hiding placo for tho body in tho straw which litters his cago. When tho keeper comes to removo tho corpse tho baboon has the rat well concealed, and is loath to part with it. Ho barks and sots up a torriblo howling, and it re quires tho combined strength of three keepers to deprivo Rocks of his treas tiro. Philadelphia North American. Men and Their Uarbers. men aro olten inoro tussy ana par- ticuh r about insignificant things than women. There nro thousands of men in Now York who go miles out of their way to get shaved. I know men who como down on tho elovated, and who get off at soino intermediate point to patronize a favorite barber. They have- dono so for years. The array of pri vato cups in any shop illustrates tho strength of this shaving habit. When a busy business mnn will sit half an hour in ono of theso shops and fumblo tho Hash papers wliilo ho waits for ills particular tonsoriai artist to bo nt lib erty, it strengthens tho conviction that he is weaker than a woman. Tho man who doesn't learn to shavo himself wliilo his beard is young is laying up n lifo of slavery to public barbers. In tho course of an ordinarily long lifetimo ho will spend about throo years sitting around n barber shop and a year or two more going nnd coming. Now York llerald. Though designed mainly to protect the patient's lip, this devico also protects tho lingers of tho dentist from tho cut ting odgos of tho lower teeth, assists In keeping tho mouth open, nnd possibly partially distracts tho mind of tho pa tient from tho operation. Tho lutlueuco of British gold in tho affairs of men and nations has long been n subject of remark and study, buttho average American citi zen scarcely allows himself to think, whllo reading of somo wonderful conquest, which English capital haa made, that this country can over be eilected thereby, and ho seems per fectly oblivious to thonlarmlug fucts that surround him. It was tho Shylock of Lombard street, Lou don, who first suggested a bonded war debt. Ho depreciated green backs bol;v gold; ho in company with his Wnll street cousins then bought greenbacks with gold nt from 47 to GO cents on thodollar, nud immediately re-luvestcd tho depre ciated greenbacks in Uultcd titntes bonds dollar for dollar. These bond were mado payable In legal tender notes (greenbacks) Interest aud prin cipal. Tho money sharks, not con tent with tho protlt made in buying greenbacks at a discount, and not content with their success in trans forming non-interest bearing notes Into interest bearing bonds, sol themselves to work to change tho contract as set forth In tho fuco of tho bonds themselves, nnd they act ually succeeded in inducing the so culled representatives of tho people in congress to pass an act making theso very bonds purchased with depreciated greenback payable prin cipal and interest in coin. Aud it litis been freely charged, and the charge is backed by much direct and clocumstantlal proof, that somo of tho money of n London Jew went to pay American statesman for thN service. Not content with Ills suc cess in doubling his wealth, while nt the same tinio ho doubled tho burden on our agriculturists and la borers, the Lombard street bauker scores another triumph over Ameri can productive labor and In favor of shrewd financial policy by sending his agent to this country with half a million in his pocket with Instruc tions tq secure the deiunnitization of silver and thus establish his bonds on a gold basis. This seeheme, belt told to our sknme, succeeded, and although it is said thero Is not, nor never was a United States bond cold by the government for gold, every ono held by a broker or money cuangor in nny part of tho world hns to bo paid in gold, Tho British finan ciers have not stopped hero either. Today thoy own lands onough In this country to inuko three such states asM iselsslppi If it lay 1 11 a body; thoy own largo interests, anil in somo instances controlling stock in many of our most linportnut rail road Hues aud other Industrial enter prises in this country. Thoy are said to have almost a monopoly of tho great elevator business, requlr inga large amount of capital. Thoy have our country flooded with mort gage and loan associations, through tho eperatlons of which they aro rapidly acquiring control of large amounts of land in every stato al most In the Union, and which bid fair to absorb in a fow years our en tire landed estate. Thoy dlctato the eviction laws of many of tho states now, aud they are so summary that it is easier to evict a family In Kan sas today than In Ireland. A littlo mora than ono hundred years ago our fathers whipped theso fellows aud conquered for us the grandest country on the globo, hut nt tho rate they havo progressed In tho past thirty ycarH In tiio business corrupt ing our legislation with their gold, it cannot bo long before they will own our people body and soul. Wlion tno power or money to op press is extended a littlo further the condition above foreshadowed will be reached, and tho people of this country becoino serfs aud slaves. and tho British bond-holders, laud speculators and usurers aro our mas ters. This is no fancy picture but tho inevitable result of the outra geous system of llnaneound legisla tion which has cursed this country tho past thirty yenrn, and which must ero long overthrow thu liberty of tho people if not speedily checked. Tho farmers would do It If aided, or even let alone by the buulncss and professional men of this country, but unfortunately many of them seem to havo a prejudice against anyttilug projosed by a "hayseed," and In u struggle for financial Inde pendence with thefoielgn plutocrats thoy throw their Influence and votes against tho Interest of their cotinUy men. Whether tho organized weulth producers nf this country will be ablo to preserve u government of the people, for tho peoplo and by tho people, or whether tho hireling tools of New and Old England will hold them In subjection and finally overthrow tho liberties of tho mum, la a fjUrstlon to bo decided much sooner than the corrupt poli ticians will admit, or many good and patriotic men suppose, Highest of all in Leavening Power. Latest U. S. Gov't Food Report, Baking Powder ABSOLUTELY PURE Rcy&l a ykaii or rnospimiTY. S. F. Chrenicle: That tho present year will bo notnbloas one of unpre cedented prosperity for the farmers of this country appears to bo an as sured fact. Close estimates nro now possible of tho nmouut of tho lead ing crops of cereals nnd other pro ducts, whllo the condition of the marked points to tho assurance that prices will certainly romnln nt n point considerably higher than has been reached for somo years, with n possibility of taking n flight far bo yond presout conservative belief. Against a norn crop last year of about 1,600,000,000 bushels thero Is abundant promise of fully 2,000,000 000 bushels for tho present season. Tho wheat crop of 1890 fell a little short of-100,000,000 bushols.whilo 1891 It will certainly reach 500,000,000. Last year tho crop of oats was C23, 000,000 bushels; this year a round hundred million will bo added, tho total being estimated at 053,000,000 bushels. Upon the basis of theso figures it will bo seen that tho crops of tho three lending cereals show an incrcaso of 28 8 per cent." over 1890 and 14.7 per cent, nbovo tho average for the past eleven yenrs. In 1890 wheat averaged a fraction over83conts a bushel, but already this season tho limit of $1 a bushel has been passed. Estimating tho average price ntthat rate, the wheat crop alone will glvo tho farmers a total of $500,000,000. Tho corn crop of 1800 averaged a littlo more thau CO cents a bushol in value. Allow ing for no Incrcaso In prico this would add $1,000,000,000 to tho vnl uo of tho cereal crop. On tho basts of last year's prices for oats that crop would yield a total of ?260,000, 000. Tho Increased value of tho crops of tho threo leading coroals would thereforo exceed by f 150,000, 000 that for 1890, and Is ?050,000,000 nioro than tho nvcrago for tho past eleven years. Cotton, rice, tobacco, hops and other stable crops Hhow tho same tendency toward an Increased yield, accompanied by higher prices, and Is therefore no unfounded claim that tho farmers of tho United States will pocket a round $1,000,000,000 more than any year during the re cent period of depressed prices. Although tho assured prosperity of tho American farmer oxposes tho fallacy of many a pot theory of tho enemies of protection, no ono will bo so churlish as to refrain from con gratulating tho agriculturist upon his prosperity. Tho Immonso amount of money that will bo put Into tho farmers' hands this year will go far toward reducing tho mortgage debt over which somo un happy politicians havo mourned wish sucli pertinacity, and its cir culation will stimulate every lino of business, except perhaps tho manu facture of freo trade "arguments," That Industry hns recolved a staggering blow by the return of prosperity to tho farmers, who, not unnaturally, pcrhnps, hud been led to aaorlbo tho lack of prosperity to matters whloh aro now shown to havo had nothing to do with caus ing tho depression that Is now hap pily at au end. Tho chancellor has for somo tlmo post been ou formal terms with tho kaiser, owing to his disapproval of measures that tho kalsor approved, aud it Is said that tho kaiser is will ing that Caprivl should go, but does not wish to drive him away. Subsequently, however, the fortunes of tho Insurgents Improved and It is hollovod that tho reports of Minister Egun's conduct will cause Secretary Blaluo to rovlso his polloy toward Chill.
