Frauk Urowu threw his trunk from tho second story and jumped after it. his trunk was smashed to pieces but Brown was unhurt Tho building was almost entirely gutted being a large three story tinder box. Had there been a west wind tho entire block would have gone, tho fire is suj poed to have been of incendiary origin. Tho merry shouts and laughter of 150 bathers at Clatsop Beach wcro suddenly hushed yesterday by tho awful cry of "A woman Is drowning!" The crowd ou tho beach began running to a spot a short distance below the Crimes hotel buthlng houses. Hero tho forms of a woumu and a man, almost lusouslblo from exhaustion, wero being carried ashore. Tho man, F. W. Dunn, recovered uulll clcutly to slato that Mrs. Jennie M. l'arker, of Astoria, had lost her. life in tho breakers. At tho time of tho accident uo one, except Mrs. l'arker and Mr. Dunn and his wife, were uear there. They had just come down from Astoria and entered tho water with tho rest of tho bathers a few minutes after 2 o'clock. Just above tho bath houses is n long reach of lovel sand which stretches out Into tho ocean without n break for over half a mile. This Is tho place where nearly all of tho bathers goiu, nud at thotlmoof tho disaster fully 150 coplo were out on this place nearly all of them being farther out than tho spot whoro Mrs. l'arker was, Clatsop Beach has long been noted for being the safest beach on the coast, and had Mr. Dunn and his companions followed tho other bathers or asked In regard to tho safety of tho place, tho accident would not have happened. Murray, who was released two days ago from the Jefferson vllllc, Iud., penitentiary, has beu arrested here on a technical charge, but Is really held, pndlBg an Investigation or an extraordinary cbarge, or which he Is accused. A few years ago attain, on which Murray was brakeman, was wrecked near Terre Haute. Murray was injured, and with maay others taken to the hospital of the Bisters of Mercy. The slstor who attended tho brakeman's wants was young, good looking aud kind, and Murray fell in love with her. When he recovered sufficiently to be able to leave the hospital he told her ot his atTectlous, and tried to induce ber to flee with him. The good wo man shocked though sympathetic, leJd her strange lover that she wuttid aot even harbor the thought ofdolHgsueh a thing, and Murray left the place in treat anger. Tho sister told her superior of tho man's iufatuation and threats. The sister afterwards went to Emporia, Kan., and soon after her arrival there a min called one eveaiug and asked to see her. The poor woman had no ooner appeared at the door when she was delt a fearful blow on the head. The sister died after making a statement that she had been struck by her Termer patleut, Murray, rearoh mr the assassin was made, but without success. This morning Clerk Ballore, of the JeiTersonvllle prison, called at the jail and identi fied Murray. The prisoner's des cription tallies with that of tho ai Ifged murdnrer. Murray whs ar raigned in the city court aud his case was postpoued to glvo the Kan sas Citv officers an opportunity to arrhc. He emphatically denies that he Is the man wanted, and says it has been more than five years siuce ho has been iu a hospital In Terra Haute, and while at the hospital he was cared for by several nuns, tho mother superior giving him the moot attention, aud that he took no more faucy to ono than another.
