Itumor hath it that the gentlemen compos ting the Oregon railroad Commission tare at outs mildly putting it, over the proposed adjustment of freight rates. The Southern Oregon member having got low rates on lumber and cattle, the Eustern ; Oregpn member having got his wool K rates fixed to suit, the member from l the Willamette valley was gently shut out from getting low ratis on grain, and tbereat he very properly kicks. And right you are Mr. Clow. NEW FIKK AUItM' SYSTEM. Salem Grlting a Good Local Fire Alaini Ilex Connection. A Balcm man who hud a $00,000 fire says: "I'd have giyen 4.20,000 on the spot If the engines could have been promptly at my lire that night." That expression gives some Idea of the value of a good lire alarm system. W ithout being aware of It our city Is getting a good start for a fire nlarm system, aud that too without payiug a big royalty to some eastern patent-right concern, such as tried to work Salem for about a thousand a ear a few mouths ago. Walter J. Ilohnuti, the new eugi nuer of the Capital! englue, showed a Journal reporter through the eu- gluo house today. The. electrical connection, gong, and lighting wires have all been overhauled with a view to getting in a good lire alarm HjBtem. A glimpse at the battery mom shows a live cell battery that works the stalls and turns the hones loose. A second battery of eight carbon cells works all the connec- Mons to the engine, annunciator and big gong that sets the horses to bounding, they paying no attention to the lirtit alarms aud gongs up htairs. A third battery of five colls works the night bells In the driver's and eugineei's rooms upstairs. The horses can only be turned loose from the safety box under control of these Iwo olllciaN. All the gas is turned on by electric curieuts aud the lire lighted. An electric contrivance invented by Capt. Pi ice draws the blankets off the horses and the mo ment the driver is hi his seat the big doors fly open and the "Caps" are off in lightning speed. THE EIRE BOXES that are biug put in diflereut parts of the city aro the regular four-call boxes used in all cities, connecting with an individual gong at engine bouse witli annunciator that locates (ire, The first call is for police, secoud for me:,seuger, third for special detail, fourth for rite. Each call consists of 24 laps; for a fire there are four rapid calls of 21 tapn each. Arrangements are being made with Mr. Holniau that will place alarms In diffeient parts of the city as follews: Cannery and Salem Woolen Mil's- Holmau Elect rio Light works. Big Capitol Mills. W. P. Dugan's new r s!dence on High stieet. A general ssteni providing for nearly all parts of the city can no doubt be worked up. These boxes are private enterprises, but so ar ranged that all fires in that section can be turned in. SALEM MANUFACrilKKS. Three Carloads of Cleaners and Sepa rators Shipped by a Salem Firm. LDanoerous Batiiinq.. There Is something strangely deceptive about Wae size and force of the Willamette wver and for bathing purposes the main channel is a dangerous place Jer bathing. This was learned by a arty of young men who wero in dulging In a swim about half mile elow the big bridge Monday even- ling. The destination of these large machines was taiverton, Forest Grove, Mo Mlnnville, McKeoand Amity. Mr. Holman accompanied the load with a force of men to set them up. In place of rakltig the earth with c flue tooth comb to find some one who will terve as president, theie should bo first-class men figuring to take the place. That would be one way to manage a university. There is one kind of ruuawny that would be appreciated in Salem if the owners of some of the shanties on the best parts of State and Com mercial streets would runaway and lake the shanties with them it would leave room for some tine buildings. A morning contemporary announces as a matter of nows that Mrs. Hopklns Scarles offers her- rcsidenco on Califor nia street for salo. It might havo add ed, as n companion item, that tho Pil grim Fathers had landed on Plymouth Rock. There has been no time for many years that the Hopkins mansion on California street has not been for sale, though, if public rumor be bo lioved, tho owner has not been distract ed by many offers to purchase It is, in fact, difficult to conceivo who could want to become its possessor at any price. Tho spectacle of Nob Hill, with pala tial piles crowning its ridgo, fills the stranger who visits California with mild amazement. There aro live big build ings there which wero built as private residences, and are as unlit for that use as could bo conceived. They wero ap parently modeled on tho plan of the palaces of tho Old World, which were erected to bo tho homes of feudal barons and all their retainers. In tho middle ages overy nobleman supported a swarm of dependents. Ho had to find quarters for them, and of course his lodgings had to bo largo. In our day rich men do not maintain much larger households than their neighbors. Individually they cannot occupy nioro than a dozen rooms, and as many will lodgo all tho servants tlioy can cm ploy. Joro rooms than this aro of no possible use. Conceived In ostentation, their destiny is to become lumber clos ets. In tho old feudal castles of Europe tho modern possesssor is lost; it gives him a nightmare to wander through a niozo of rooms which aro nover occu pied savo by-mlco and spidors, and ho llees to tako rcfugo in a bedroom and parlor at club or hotel. It must bo much tho san io in tho mansions of Nob Hill. If thoy havo any destiny it must bo to becomo soino day public buildings museums or hospitals. Even for that uso thoy would liivo to bo donated by their owners, for tho city could build suitnblo edilices for less monoy than thoy would cost if thoy wero bought. It seems odd that men with tho sa gacity required to build a transconti nental railroad and to acquire vast fortunes should not havo understood that a houbo that is too big may bo as inconvenient as a liouso that is too small. A very small quantity of shel ter is all that tho richest and greatest of us can want. A bedroom, a dress ing room, a reception room, a parlor, a dining room, a library, and perhaps a billiard room what inoro than this can Crrasus ocoupy, though ho counts his riches by tho hundreds of millions. Yet rich men go on piling stono upon stono and bricks upon mortar until thoy havo exchanged what might havo been a snug homo for a barrack; and in tho doing of it thoy genorato a mass of envy and grudging which follows them to their grave. San Francisco Call. Tho Ocean. Tho great storeliouso of tho world's water is tho ocean, which covers four fifths of tho globo's surface. In soino places tho ocean has never been sound ed, oven by a lino moro than flvo miles in length. It is supposed theso great depths uro without plants, because all plants requiro somo light, and though light is said to penotrato sea wator farther than fresh, yet wo can scarcely imngino tiioro is a ray of light at tho depth of flvo miles. Somo of tho sea plants liavo stems nt least 300 feet In length. In somo parts of tho 6oa wo ore told that tho oyo can discern tho bottom at four or flvo hundred feet. It is n very pretty sight to look down and vlow a forest beneath tho waves. It Is sometimes a blazo of gold, scarlot and green. In ono part of tho Atlantic Is a spaco which tho Spaniards call tho Sargasso sea, becauso its surface is cov ered thero for miles nnd miles with a great mass of seaweed,, which Columbus spoko of as "floating meadows." Montreal Star. Tho Xoivh Editor' Nomel. "Years ago," said a nows editor, "I used to havo on my list a correspondent atralparaiso. Ho would send reports of church socials by wlro, and wo couldn't shut him off. Ono day a store down in his placo burned. Tho loss proved to bo about 5,000. Ho began sending bulletins as sooa as tho flro broko out, nnd kept it up ovory ton minutes till tho last spark of tho con narration was out. Wo tried to choko him off, but ho couldn't bo suppressed. Thero aro two persons on earth whom I would llko to uieet boiuo thno when I am feeling real well and strong. Thoy aro that correspondent ' and tho man who sold mo a fountain pen." Indian apolis Sontlnel. Jones & Bornardi Qonuino FRENCH ICE CREAM SODA.. Only in tho city and do not forgot it, Zeno' I'urudox. Many persons will recall tho famous paradox of Zeno, by which ho sought to prove that all motion is impottdblo. "A body," ho arguod, "must move either In a placo whoro it ia or in a placo whoro It la not. Now, a body in tho placo whoro It Is is stationary and cannot bo In motion, nor, obviously, can It bo in motion In tho placo whoro it is Jiot Therefore it cannot move at all," Bodies do move, liowovor, and tliat U a Mifllolont answer to the Ingenious philosopher.
