Mr Zlmencr had an unrivaled view from the top of tho staff, but that waa not what ho went up for. Tho staff needed painting, nnd, as it could not very well bo taken down, some ono had to climb to tho top of it. Mr. Zimcner has climbed poles before, but nover one whoso top was so far abovo tho earth. A ropo was passed twico around the polo at tho point whero It emerges from tho cupola, each end being securely fastened to a llttlo wooden seat. Tills ropo was moved up a few feet, whero It hung by tho simple strain which the weight of tho scat brought upon the coils around tho pole. When Zlmencr was ready to as cend ho put tho wooden seat down over his head until it reached the proper dis tancu, when ho eat down upon it to test it Tho double coil of ropo clung to the pole, and tho seat was found to bo perfectly secure. Ho then put his right foot through tho loops of the other rope, using them as n stirrup When ho pressed his weight down tho colls tightened and ho stood upright Next ho moved tho upper ropo up wnrd a foot or two. sitting down again whilo ho raised tho foot ropo upward an equal distance. Standing again ho raised tho scat ropo. So ho went, a foot or two at n tlmo on each ropo, un til ho n en red tho big gilt ball on tho top of tho polo. Then seizing tho top of tho polo ho climbed with his legs until high enough to stand on his scat, hold lug fast to tho Iron support of tho ball with his hands. Tlio crowds in tho streets stood still to watch liis every movement, and tho teamsters over on Broadway almost caused a blockado by stopping to look.
