General committee A F Hofer KISSING DANGEROUS. Poctors Claim Tlmt TomllltU I Conto glon Tlirough KlMlnff. Is tonsilitls contagious? Is a question which has been puzzling many promi nent physicians of late. , During tho past two years n great in crease in tho number of cases has been noticed, until at present it almost re sembles nn epidemic, but hitherto has not been considered ft contagious dls- ROSEPHLEi case. In an interviow with n prominent physician I learned that tho only wny of overcoming its progress Is to protest against kissing. Tlieso nro his own werds: "Any charming young lady possess ing a sweet, rosebud mouth, with a voice upon which phlcgmonis has fast ened itself, cannot bo kissed without phlegmonis being tho price paid by tho person who takes part with her in tho dual bliss. Her perfumed breath, with Its silvery tones and soft whispers, is Oiled with contagion, in which mi crobes of marvelous form fly to now fields of pasture. Hosts of cunning but riotous bactoria linger upon her coral lips waiting to board thoso of tho mustached ono who recklessly ap proaches." Thus it is very plain that young gen tlemen and their sweethearts should bo very careful that no kissing is done be fore it is learned by both parties whether tonsilitis has settled In tho throat of either. 'Phlegmonis," said tho doctor, "is a sort of tonsilitis. Tho ordinary com monplaco tonsilitis is not contagious. Indeed, tho ordinary form is merely an inflammation of tho tonsils, which aro glands in tlio back of tlio throat with secretions niding tlio process of swal lowing. An invasion of tho glands by hosts of liptothrax, n bacterium, whioh Is normal in tlio mouth, aro tho canso of this most troublesome inflammation. They aro a vegctablo microbe, which is nlwavs rashis in tlio mouth nnd is nourished by tho saliva and bits of food that get into tho holes of decayed teeth. .This Is tho reason why pooplo who have had bad teeth aro moro apt to bo troubled with tonsilitis." Tho doctor paused for a moment and centinued: "Although phlegmonis is an inflam mation of tlio tonsils it is vastly difforcnt from tho ordinary tonsilitis, as it is con tagious and tlio inflammation extends all through the entire mouth and ulcer ated tonsils. Then, too, tho ordinary tonsilitis very seldom lasts longer than a week and can bo cured in about twenty-four hours, while phlegmonis lasts longer, is moro sovero and harder to cure. "Many great singers havo been troubled with it, among whom aro Patti, Nilsson, Lucca, Campanini and others." Thus it is evident, if the decision of prominent physicians may bo believed, that kissing Is really a dangerous pleas uro, nnd that thoso who take part in tha dual blisa should bo very cautious not to approach their real enemy as a friend with open arms only to bo de ceived by tlio friendly greeting of its spy who awaits thoui with a fascinating smile, while behind tlio scones an army of bacteria is impatiently waiting tho timo which is suro to come when they can spring upon tlio innocent person who is conquered by its cunning, sclioming ways. But will tills advico of thoso physi cians bo considered ? Now York Herald.
