Pendleton, Ore., Juno 18. Word has just reached hero-from Monu ment, Grant county, of a double murder which occurred there several days ago. A mnn named Churchill, who owns n blacksmith shop at Monument, went away from home and left his assistant iu charge of the shop. Churchill has n small field adjoining his shop, where per sons coming into towu have been accustomed to turn their horses, using tho blacksmith shop as an en trance, as the gate had been nailed. Churehlll Instructed his 'tsslstaut to allow no more horses In the field. Ou his return home, he found his order uaa oeeu disobeyed, nud a quarrel eusued between himself and the assistant. Churchill drew bis revolver and shot the mau daad. Churchill then mounted his horse nud made his escape. It takes more coal to mako steam on such a night, though tho flro seems to burn fiercer and brighter. As we pulled out Nell showed in his determined manner mid by the way he handled her that ho meant to make up the twenty minutes, for all ahead our line was clear. On wo sped, counting off the mile stones at tho rato of forty an hour wjiere the road was level. Ah, theso bleak winter nights! Hopefully we peer Into tho darkness, but can only see what tho headlight shows us. "No. 145" eastbound freight train running to Omaha would either side track at a small station called Sheldon or one three miles further east called Eibling, until wo passed. Wo passed Elbling at 10-45, and It was a comfort to think there would bo no delay on our road, and wo swept swiftly onward toward Sheldon, whero wo expected "No. 145" to bo safely sidetracked, since she had not run into Elbling. Hut an unavoidable accident had occurred just around a curve, whero the road followed tlio smooth, wind ing bank of the Platte. An axle had broken and got one of their cars off tho track. Tlio train hands -conductor and brakemen were in the caboose for warmth, and did not notice tho accident for a tune. The train was finally brought to a standstill, and as they did so other cars wero de railed, which threw the whole train into confusion. Signals aro often ob scure in the frosty air, and they said wo came upon them very quickly after tho signal lanterns wero gotten out As wo shot around the curvo going at a great speed I saw the 6team from tho freight engine. Nell was looking out on his side. "We are lost, Nell!" I shouted. "No. 145 Is on our line." In an instant we had shut off, reversed and whistled for brakes. As wo came up I swung out, for I saw deatli ahead of us. "Jump, ruelll" I cried. Ho glanced toward mo, and then straight ahead. Tho look on his faco seemed to say to me, "It is all right for you to go; 1 must not leave my engine!" In that ono lightning glanco I seemed to see tho brave, heroic soul of my engineer shining in his honest, pleasant face. Theu I jumped, rolled over and over down tho steep river bank, and landed on tho ico. There was a mighty crash, aud I saw from tho spot whero 1 had fallen, dazed but unhurt, our engine and several cars pitched headlong down tho embankment. Tho silence of the night was broken by asronizin cries for help and heartrending screams and prayers. We who wero uninjured worked with a will. Twelve passengers wero killed and many injured. I looked and watched for Nell, hoping ho would soon bo seen at woi k among us. After clearing away piles of wreck, wo found him at dawn lying under his engine in the shallow water beneath the ice.
