TRlCKd Wliild at. parades the pollco captain ftfpmr to bo proud of their' spick nnd pan uniform, eetofrwKh brass buttons Md gold lace, It Is a curious fact that in ordinary circumstances they seem to te unhappy when tlioy aro compelled to appear in thera In public. Various rea0ts may bo assigned for this rcpug rnuwe to wearing the livery of tho force. Perhaps In tho streets and In public conveyances It attracts attention to tho ' wedrcr and oxcltcs comment, not only In regard to liim, but tho forco In gen eral. A shrewder guess is that if, for ira&anca, a pollco captain is summoned to police headquarters in n hurry, he may, when his business U transacted there, wish to go elsewhere and not be conspicuous. At any rato many dodgesaro resorted to to escape uniform wearing In tho streets. One of them is to forward tho uniform ahead to tho Central office, don it down stairs on arriving, and ship Jt off when leaving. This succeeds In the main, but patrolmen aro often delayed, and as often aro untrustworthy messengers, and instances abound of captains arriving just on timo and fum ing becauso their garments havo not arrived, forthorulo against appearing before tho superintendent, tho coinmls eloners or In tho trial room in "mufti" unless specially excused Is rigidly en forced. Another schemo Is an ingenious one. Tho polico tailors aro all near the polico headquarters, and tho rulo was circum vented years ago by having dummy uniform coats handy and of soveral sizes ready for emergencies, so that a captain summoned in hasto could slip into tho tailor's a civilian aud emergo in all tho glory of blue, brass and braid. Sometimes, however, officers have 'been caught In a trap by tho uniform that would fit them having been don ned by another, and havo had no al ternative but to wait or put on gar ments too tight or too baggy. Nobody has ever been disciplined for this, but both Mr. Murray and Mr. Byrnes have now and then "reckoned up" a subor dinate in 111 fitting uniform in a fashion that made him feel unhappy, while the contrast between oven a well fitting coat and Broadway promenado trou sers has been startling. Like accommodations aro to bo found for patrolmen who do duty in citizen's dreas, and aro required In certain and sudden circumstances to appear in uni form at tho Central office. Some of them havo been detected and guyed into uniiappiness. Now York Times. A Parrot That Seemed to Think. I am inclined to fancy that parrots learn and perhaps understand phrases relating to eating and drinking almost sooner than any others. One of my feathered acquaintances was In tho Tiabit of Inviting visitors to take refresh ment "Won't you havo a cup of tea? Do havo a cup of tea," sho would say; and sometimes It was really awkward, as almost compelling tho mistross to ox tend her hospitality to visitors for whom such an invitation had not previously been intended. Tills bird was also fond- of saying "Qoodby," and novcr said it at tho wrong time. When tho visitor was about to depart ho or sho would bo startled oy a voice Irom a personage hitherto unseen, saying, "Well, good by I goodbyl" If that parrot did not know tliat this was tho proper thing to s&y, and that this was tho proper timo for saying It, I am no Judgo of parrots. This bird had been taught to count up to six, but sho could rarol say tho numbers all in ordor. Sho often missed ono not tho samo tlguro, howover; three, four or flvo woro (but only ono at a time) tier usual omissions. Sho was always conscious that sho had made a mistake, and on "skipping" a figure would give a shrill comical whis tle and begin again. Somo kind of thought and calculation must havo passed through her mind during this performance. Chambers' Journal. The Mining I'uwn. One Saturday afternoon, according to their wont, two friends of tho noblo gaiuo of chess sat playing togothor in n Frankfort cafo, Suddonly ono of them started up from his scat in a passion and exclaimed: "You havo taken ono of my pawns I" A glanco at tho board and men suf ficed to show tlint a pawn was really missing.
