thing to tho members of the Hrooklyn
Tabernacle church to have- their pas
tor's eminence acknowledged by tho
outside, world. But even they must
Jiavo been gratified by tho distinction
conferred upon him sinco last Sunday.
In listening to Dr. Talmngo today they
were listening to the chaplain of tho
Ancient and Honorable Artillery Com
pany of Massachusetts, in which ofllco
ho was formally Installed with due cere
mony on Juno 1. Tho organization,
which is two hundred and fifty years
old, and tho lineal descendant of an
English organization dating back to tho
beginning of tho Sixteenth century, has
had many distinguished divines as
chaplains, and tho honor has always
been highly appreciated. The subject
of Dr. Talmago's sermon this morning
was "Tho Burden Bearer," and his test
Psalms lv, 22: "Cast thy burden upon
tho Lord, and he shall sustain thee."
DAVID'S HA11D KXPKUIKNCK.
David was hero taking his own medi
cine. If anybody had on him heavy
weights, David had them, and yet out
of his own experience ho advises you
and mo as to tho best way of getting
rid of burdenB. This is a world of bur
den bearing. Coming into tho houso
of prayer there may bo no sign of sad
ness or sorrow, but where is the man
who has not a conflict? Where is tho
soul that has not a strugglo? And there
Is not a day of all tho year when my
text is not gloriously appropriate, and
there is nover an audience assembled
on tlm planet whero tho text docs ne:
fit tho occasion, "Cast thy burden upon
tho Lord, and ho shall fetistain thee."
In tho far east wells of water aro so
infrequent that when a man owns a
well ho has a property of very great
value, and sometimes battles liavo been
fought for tho possession of o:io well of
water; but there is one well that every
man owns, a deep well, a perennial
well, a well of tears. If a man has not
a burden on this shoulder, ho-has a
burden on tho other shoulder. Tho
day I left homo to look after myself
and for myself, in the wagon my
father sat driving, ho said that day
something which has kept with mo
all my life: "Do Witt, it is always
safe to trust God. I havo many a

You may know that, having been
sick for fifteen years, it was no
easy thing for mo to support a
family; but always God camo to tho
resctio. I remember the time," he said,
"when I didn't know what to do, and
I saw a man on horseback riding up
tho farm lane, and ho announced to
mo that I had been nominated for tho
most lucrative olflco in tho gift of tho
people of tho county; and to that olllco
I was elected, and God in that way met
all my wants, and 1 tell you it is always
bale to trust him." Oh, my friends,
what wo want is a practical religion 1
Tho religion people havo is so high up
you cannot reach it. I havo a friend
who entered tho lifo of an ovangelist.
Ho gave up a lucrative business in Chi
cago, and ho and his wife finally camo
to fcovcro want. Ho told mo that in
tho morning at prayers ho bald: "0
Lord, thou knowet wo havo not a
mouthful of food in tho house! Help
me, help us I"
And ho started out on tho street, and
a gentleman met him and said: "I
have been thinking of you for a good
while. You know I am a Hour mer
chant; if you won't be offended 1
should liko to send you a barrel of
Hour." My friend cast his b lrden on
tho Lord, and tho Lord sustained him.
In tho Straits of Magollan, I havo been
told, there Is a place where, whichever
way n ship captain puts his ship ho
finds the wind against him, and there
are men who all their lives havo beon
nnjning in tho teeth of tho wind, and
which way to turn they do not know.
Somo of them may be here this morn
ing, and I nddro&s them face to face,
not perfunctorily, but as one brothor
talks to another brother, "Cast thy
burden upon the Lord, and ho shall

i First There are a great many men
who havo business burdens, When wo
see a man harried and perplexed and
annoyed In business life wo are apt to
nay, "Ho ought not to have attempted
to carry so much." Ah I that man may
not be to blame at nil. When a man
plants a business ho does not know
what will be its outgrowths, what will
bo its roots, what will bo Its bruuohos.
There la many a man with keen fore
bight and largo business faculty who
has been Hung Into tho dust by unfore
seen circumstances springing upon him
from ambush. When to buy, wlwu to
boll, -wlion to trust, and to what amount
of credit, what will be the oiTect of
this now invention of maohlnory, what
will bo tho effect of that loss of crop,
and a thousand othor questions iwrplox
buslni'bs men, until tho hair Is silvered
and doon wrinkles are plowed hi thu
cheek : nnd the stocks ko lip by the
mountains and go down by the valleys,
nnd thov aro at their wits' ends, and
bUuruvr like drunken men.
There nover has been a time wlion
there havo been suoh rivalries In tu4

tage of light, never such variety of as
sortment, never so much splendor of

ness of salesmen, never so much ncuto-
ness of advertising, and amid all these
severities of rivalry In business, how
many men break down I Oh, tho bur
den on tho shoulder! Oh, tho burden
on tho heart! You hear that it Is
avarice which drives theo men of busi
ness through tho street, and that is tho
commonly accepted idea. I do not bo
llevo a word of it. Tho vast multitudo
of these business men aro toiling on for
others.
To educate their children, to put tho
wing of protection over their house
holds, to have something loft, so when
they pass out of this lifo their wives
and children will not havo to go to the
poorhouso that is the way I translate
this energy in the street nnd store the
vast majority of that energy. Grip,
Gouge & Co. do not do all tho busi
ness. Some of us remember when tho
Central America was coining homo
from California it was wrecked. Presi
dent Arthur's father-in-law was the
heroic captain of that ship, and went
down with most of tho passengers.
Some of them got off into lifeboats,
but there was a young man returning
from California who had a bag of gold
in his hand, and as tho last boat
shoved off from tho ship that was to
go down that man shouted to a com
rade in tho beat: "Here, John, catch
this gold 1 There aro three thousand
dollars. Tako it homo to my old
mother. It will make her comfortable

do not do all tho business of tho world.
Ah I my friend, do you say that God
does not caro anything about your
worldly business? I tell you God knows
more about it than you do. Ho knows
all your perplexities; ho knows what
mortgagee is about to foreclose; ho
knows what note you cannot pay;
ho knows what unsalable goods you
havo on your bholves; ho knows all
your trials, from the day you took hold
of tho first yard stick down to tho sale
of tho last yard of ribbon, and tho God
who helped David to bo king, and who
helped Daniel to bo prime minister, and
who helped Havclock to bo a soldier,
will help you to discharge all your
duties. Ho is going to see you through.
When loss comes, and you find your
property going, just tako this Book
and put it down by your ledger, and
read of tho eternal possessions that will
como to you through our Lord Jesus
Christ. And when your business part
ner betrays you, and your friends turn
against you, just tako tho insulting let
ter, put it down on tho table, put your
Bible besido tho insulting letter, nnd
then read of tho friendship of him who
"stieketh closer than a brother."

A young accountant in New York
city got his nceounts entangled. Ho
know ho was honest, and yet ho could
not uiako his accounts como out right,
and ho toiled at them day and night
until he was nearly frenzied. It seemed
by thoso books that something had
been misappropriated, and ho know be
fore God ho was honest. Tho last day
came. Ho knew if ho could not that
day make his accounts como out right
ho would go into dUgraco and go into
banishment from the business establish
ment. Ho went over there very early,
before there was anybody in tho place,
and ho knelt down at tho desk and
said: "Oh, Lord, thou knowest I havo
tried to bo honest, but I cannot mako
these- things como out right! Help mo
today help mo this morning!" Tho
young man arose, and hardly knowing
why ho did so, opened a book that lay
on tho desk, and thero was a leaf con
taining a lino of figures which explained
everything.
In other words, ho cast his burden
upon tho Lord, and tho Lord sustained
him. Young man, do you hear that?
Oh, yes, God has a sympathy with any
body that is in any kind of toil! Ho
knows how heavy is tho hod of bricks
that tho workman carries up tho ladder
of tho wall. Ho hears tho pickax of
the miner down in tho coal shaft, llo
knows how strong tho tempest strikes
tho sailor at tho masthead. Ho sees
tho factory girl among tho spindles and
knows how her arms ache. Ho sees
tho sewing woman in tho fourth story
and knows how fow pence sho gets for
making a garment, nnd louder Uian oil
tho din and roar of tho city comes tho
voieo of a sympathetic God, "Cost thy
bunion upon tho Lord, and ho shall
sustain thee."

Second There are a great many who
have a weight of persecution and abuse
upon thorn. Sometimes society gets a
grudge against a man. All his motives
are misinterpreted and his good deeds
aro depreciated.. With more virtue
than some of the honored and applaud
od, he runs only against raillery and
sharp critleisin. When a man begins
to go down he has not only tVe force of
natural gravitation, but a hundred
hands to help him in the precipitation.
Men are persecuted for their virtues
and their suooes. (iermauleus mid
ho had Just as many bitter antagonists
as he had adornments.
Tho character sometimes is so lus
trous that the wonk eyas of envy and
jealousy cannot boar to look at it. it
was their Integrity that put Joseph In
the nit. and Daniel in the den, and
Shadmeh in the tiro, and sent John the
KvtutgelUt to desolate Patinos, and
Calvin to tho castle of persecution, and
John lluss to the stake, and Komli
after Moses, and Haul alter David, and
Hurud after ChrUt Be wire if you
have anything to do furchurohor statu,
and you attempt It with all your soul,
the lightning will stnhe you.
Tho world always has had a cros
between two thieves for tho ono who
comes to save it. High and holy en
terprise has always been followed by
abuse. Tho most sublime trogedy of
self sacrifice has como to burlesque.
The graceful gait of virtue is always
followed by grimace and travesty. Tho
sweetest strain of poetry ever written
has come to ridiculous parody, and as
long as thero nro virtuo and righteous
ness in tho world thero will bo some
thing for iniquity to grin at. All along
the lino of tho ages, and In nil lands,
tho cry has been : "Not this man, but
Barabbas. Now, Barabbas was a rob
ber." And what makes tho persecution of
lifo worse is that they come from poo
plo whom you have helped, from thoso
to whom you have loaned money or
have started in business, or whom you
rescued in somo great crisis. I think it
has been the history of all our lives
tho most acrimonious assault has come
from thoso whom we havo benefited,
whom wo havo helped, and that makes
it all the harder to bear. A man is in
danger of becoming cynical.
BKMKVKD IX UXIVKHSAL DAMNATION.
A clergyman of tho Universalist
church went into a neighborhood for
the establishment of a church of his
denomination, and he was anxious to
find some one of that denomination,
nnd he was pointed to a certain houso
and went there. Ho said to the man
of the house, "I understand you are a
Universalist; I want you to help me in
the enterprise." "Well," said tho man,
"I am a Universalist, but I have a pe
culiar kind of universalism." "What
is that?" asked tho minister. "Well,"
replied the other, "I have been out in
tho world, and I havo been cheated
and slandered and outraged and abused
until I believo in universal damnation I"
Tho great danger is that men will be
come cynical and given to believe, as
David was tempted to say, that all
men are liars. Oh, my friends, do not
let that be the effect upon your souls!
If you cannot endure a little persecu
tion, how do you tliink our fathers en
dured great persecution? ""Motley, in
his "Dutch Republic," tells us of Eg
mont, the martyr, who, condemned to
bo beheaded, unfastened his collar on
tho way to the scaffold, and when they
asked him why he did that ho said, "So
they will not bo detained in their work;
I want to bo ready." Oil, how little we
havo to endure compared with thoso
who have gono before usl"
Now, if you havo como across ill
treatment, let mo tell you you aro in
excellent company Christ nnd Luther
and Galileo and Columbus and John
Jay and Josiah Quincy nnd thousands
of men and women, tho best spirits of
earth and heaven. Budgo not ono
inch, though all hell wreck upon you
its vengeance, and you bo made a tar
got for devils to shoot at. Do you not
think Christ knows all about persecu
tion ? Was ho not hissed at ? Was ho
not struck on tho cheek? Was ho not
pursued all tho days of his lifo? Did
thoy not oxpectorato upon him? Or,
to put it in Bible language, "They spit
upon him." And cannot ho under
stand what persecution is? "Cast thy
burden upon tho Lord, nnd ho shall sus
tain thee."
THK nUHDEN OK SICKNKS3.
Third Thero aro others who carry
great burdens of physical ailments.
When sudden sickness lias come, and
fierce choleras aud malignant fevers
tako tho castles of lifo by storm, wo '
appeal to God; but in thoso chronic
ailments which wear out the strength
day after day, and week after week,
and year after year, how little resort
ing to God for solacol Then people
depend upon their tonics, and their
plasters, and their cordials, rather than
upon heavenly stimulants. Oh, how
fow people there aro completely well.
Somo of you, by dint of perseverance
and care, havo kept living to this timo;
but how you havo had to war against
physical ailments! Antedii-vians, with
out medical collego and infirmary and
apothecary shop, multiplied their years
by hundreds, but ho who has gono
through tho gantlet of disease in our
time, and has como to seventy years of
age, is a hero worthy of a palm.
Tho world seems to bo a great hos
pital, and you run ngainst rheumatisms
nnd consumptions and scrofulas and
neuralgias and scores of old diseases
baptized by new nomenclature. Oh,
how heavy a burden sickness Is! It
takes tho color out of tho sky and the
spnrklo out of tho wavo and tho sweet
ness out of tho fruit and tho luster out
of tho night Wlion tho limbs ache,
when tho respiration is painful, when
tho mouth is hot, when tho ear roars
with unhealthy obstructions, how hard
It is to be lwttont and cheerful and as
siduous! "Cast thy burden upon tho
Lord." Does your head ache? His
wore tho thorn. Do your tcet hurt?
His were crushed of tho splkos. Is your
side painful? Ills was struck by tho
spoor. Do you fool liko giving way
under tho bunion? His weaVuess gave
way under the cross.
While you nro in every possible way
to try to restore your physical vigor,
you are to remember that more sooth
ing than any anodyne, and more vital
izing than any stimulant, and more
strengthening than any tonlo is the
proscription of the text, "Cost thy bur
den upon tho Lonl, and he shall sus
tain thee." Wo hoar a great deal ol
talk now about faith cure, and some
people say it cannot bo done and It is
a failure. 1 do not know but that the
ohlof advnneo of tho church Is to be in
that direction. Marvelous things come
to ine day by day whloh make methhik
that If tho age of miracles is past It I
because the faith of miracles Is past.

A prominent merchant of New York
aid to o member of my family, "My
mother wants her cast' mentioned to
Mr. Tahnagc." This was tho case. Ho
Raid: "Mf inotlior had a dreadful ab-
jscoss, from which she line' suffered uu
' told agonies, and all surj-ory had been
'exhausted upon her. aid worse and
worse sho grew until we i ailed in a fow
' Christian friends and pro 'coded to pray
about it. Wo commended her caso to
God and tho abscess began immediate
ly to be curcI. She is entirely well
now. and without knife and without
any surgery." So that com' has come
to me, and there are a score of other
cases coming to our oars from all parts
of the earth. Oh, ye who are sick, go
to Christ! Oil, ye who are worn out
with agonies of body, "c-f4 thy burden
upon tho Lord, and he shall sustain
thee!"

Another burden some have to carry
is the burden of bereavement. Ah!
these are the troubles that wear us out.
If we lose our property, by additional
industry, perhaps, we may bring back
the estranged fortune; if wo lose our
good name, perhaps by reformation of
morals we may achieve again reputa
tion for integrity; but who will bring
back the dear departed ? Alas! me for
these empty cradles and these trunks of
childish toys that will never bo used
again. Alas! me for the empty chair
and tho silenco in the halls that will
never echo again to those familiar foot
prints. Alas! for the ery of widow
hood and orphanage.
What bitter Marahs in the wilderness!
What cities of the dead! Wliat long
black shadow from the wing of death!
What eyes sunken with grief! AVhat
hands tremulous with bereavement!
What instruments of hiumo shut now
because there are no fingers to play on
them! Is thero no relief for snch souls?
Aye, let tho soul ride into the harbor of
my text.
Tho soul that on Jesus bath leaned for rcpoe,
I will not, I Mill not desert to its foes;
That soul, though nil htll shall endeavor to
shako,
I'll never, no never, no uevcr forsake.
Now, tho grave is brighter than the
ancient tomb where the lights wero
perpetually kept burning. The scarred
feet of him who was "the resurrection
and tho life" aro on tho broken gravo
hillock, while the voices of angels ring
down tho sky nt the coronation of an
other -oul come home to glory.
Then there are many who carry the
burden of sin. Ah, wo carry it until
in tho appointed way that burden is
lifted. Wo need no Bible to prove that
the whole race is ruined. AVhat a spec
tacle it would bo if wo could tear off
tho mask of human defilement, or beat
a drum that would bring up the whole
army of the world's tmii'n'-vions
the deception, tho fraud, and tho rapine,
and tho murder, and the crime of all
tho centuries! Aye, if I could sound
the trumpet of resurrection in the sonl
of tho best men in this audience, and
nil tho dead sins of the past should
como up, wo could not enduro the
sight. Sin. grim and dire, has put its
clutch upon thoimiuortal soul, and that
clutch will never relax unless it be un
der the heel of him who came to de
stroy tho works of tho devil.
Oh, to have a mountain of sin on tho
soul! Is thero no way to havo tho bur
den moved ? O yes. "Cast thy burden
upon tho Lord." Tho sinless One camo
to tako tho consequences of our sin!
And I know lie is in earnest. How do
1 1 know it? By tho streaming temples
and tho streaming nanus as lie says,
"Come unto mo all ye who nro weary
and heavy laden, and I will givo you
rest." Why will prodigals live on
swines' husks when the robe, and the
ring, and the father's wclcomoare ready ?
Why go wandering over the great Sa
hara desert of your sin when you aro
invited to tho gardens of God, the trees
of lifo and tho fountains of living wa
ter? Why bo houseless and homeless
forover when you may beconio tho sons
and daughters of tho Lonl God Almighty?

A bride's first lesson is to respect the
extreme sensitiveness of her husband,
who doesn't want people to knovhoiy
has just been married. Consequently
she will bo wiso if after her first jour
noy sho assumes a gown that has seen
wear; if she will forget to look around
in a startled manner whenever her hus
band is gone from her side, as it is not
likely that ho is either going to bo lost
or stolen, Tho noit thing is not to kiss
