The Seattle pnat TiAlllirencer. of May li), has the following of interest to Marlon county peeple: "The United States revenue cutter Bear arrived in port yesterday direct from Alaska, and she comes laden with n great deal of interesting northern news. On board are fifteen shipwrecked sailors of the unfortunate schooner Pre mier, which went to pieces April 30, on the rocks at Cape St. Joliu, Western Alaska, and she also brought down u distinguished wed ding party. Hon. Louis H. Tarpley, formerly of Salem, Or., and now United States commissioner at Una laska, was ordered by the depart ment of justice to take the cruise for the purpose of taking testimony of witnesses In the mur der cases to be heard at Sitka. He left Seattle witli the Bear and made the trip to Behriug sea. When the cutter returned to Sitka he was married to Miss Betsie E. Bugby, daughter of Hon. John S. Bugby, of San Francisco, now United States district judge for the district of Alaska, a very accomplished lady. The weddiug wus a very brilliant affair for tLe far-off territory. Mr. and Mrs. Tarpley came to Seattle on their wedding tour and will be taken toUualaska, or the far-off Aleutian island:!. Colt Show. There is consider able interest being manifested about the colt show which is to take place in Salem on Saturday the 23rd inst, and from present appearances there will be a great many people here from all over Marlon, Polk aud Linn counties, to see the fine dis play of colts that will be presented for inspection. There will be here on exhibition, Draft horses, Road sters, Trottiug horses and llunniug horses, and I learn that it is tue i tention of the committee having this show in charge to grade all the streets the past few days. Some think the opportunity Irs past to make sure the sueees of any thing of tho kind. Others think there is hlugif it Jot'ItNAIj representative interviewed a num ber of the business men, and their opinions are given in brief: Hon. A. Bush, the bunker, said he would rather be spared the celebra tion tills year. T. McF. Pattou would like to free a celebration In Salem, but there are several drawbacks, and fears for its success tilts year. T. C. Bhaw is of the opinion that it is not best to endeavor to have a celebration. Ho says if we do try we will make a flat failure, every thing is against us, the baud isgoue, flie military companies are gone, and we haven't the attractions. R. B Cannon said his experience iu California, was that where a town celebrated every year, the interest was not kept up. Councilman Lafore thinks wo oven yet could have a celebration at home. J. II. Albert thinks we can have a good fourth in Salem, but for him self lie wnuMprufer to goto the coun try and have a quiet time. Joseph Fishburuc thinks it will not lie a success, and we want noth iug of last year'b demonstration. G. W. Johnson says It Is a good thlutr and can lie made a success even witii the band and militia iu Eugene. R. S. Wallace says it is a good thing and -hould be had. O. E. Kruusse says Witlem is too much of n town to ullow the day to pas unobserved; the way to m-'ke it a succebs is to get iu and do some thing. J. Westacott says something new can be devised to attract tho people in the abseuce of the band and ma" litia. W. F.Boothby, weshould not start in unless it is to succeed, The suc cess of Inst year should be equaled or no attempt should be made. J C. Brown & Co. aie willing to do their part and will aid iu auy scheme, but do not believe it feasible to have a celebration this year. J. H. Lunn had nothing to say on the subject. Wm. Browu believes it advisable to wait until next year. We want a first-class celebration or uoue. A. Klein thinks it too late to do much, other towns have the start of us and have secured the attractions. Gilbert & Patterson were willing to double their subscription to make it a go and thought no effort should be snared to complete the success of the day. Ben Forstner thinks It a good thing financially for the city to cele brate. T. Holverson says it is a little late to attempt to get up a celebration that would be a credit to the city. 'nl. W. N. Ladue says give a mild celebration this year and re- j serve the energy for next year, when an effort should be made to J secure the encampment of the militia. C. L. Keller thinks a celebration is not a benefit to the city in general. The hotel men, cigar stores and eating houses will profit, but not other business houses. He says tho He AtDKD tiik Drunk. Wed nesday afternoon a man was picked up in tho rear of G. W. Johnson & Son's clothing store in a drunken condition. He was lodged In the cooler to sober up and stand trlat this morning. In the night a young fellow, who desired to befriend the prisoner, thought lie could aid him to gain his liberty. To carry his design into ellect he passed a big carving knife, which hud the back converted into a saw, through the grates to the man who was behind the bars, but to his surprise he hud scarcely committed the act until an nlllcer hud ills bauds on him. He was allowed to stay inside the cooler all night to cousole his friend. Tho former was fined $10 40 this morning Tho other fellow was arraigned this afternoon on a charge of carrying concealed weapous and was fined $3 and costs. The officers were in doubt for a while whnt charge to bring against him. -rrr1'iiiiMMiirilfw--'"J,-'"'''rw IjWTWil LOCAL BRIEFS. Iiccolidnc uhnu- Ni:w Statu Laws. A few days ago one was blowed out of the hole which was estimated would weigh 75 tons. It was left standing on the brink of the hill. A few feet more would have sent It hurling down the steep grade into the slough. Seventy-five pounds of powder was lined in hoisting this stone out of the reservoir. Some heavy charges will be set oil' just after six o'clock this evening. A number of persons will be over to see the work of powder. The Tournament. The state tournament for gun sportsmen will open in this city tomorrow. The tournament is strictly a state affair and will bo limited to Oregon shooters. A large number of lovers of gun exercise are expected in the city during the two days' contest. In addition to these a large number of ttioo curious to see such sport will be in attendance. Work is being done today fixing up the ground and arranging beating accommodations. - keeping of the money at home that ."da.ng.' might otherwise be spent abroad Is w , the only advantage of a celebration. beeIdo ,, Leo Willis thinks it wise to cete v and cultivate p st,.i.m Is lurire enough to celebrate High Akt. A Journal rt porter was in Cherrington's fine art studio this morning, and among other fine pictures for which this firm has a leputation, his attention wus called to a large art photo of Miss Arbe gast, which would bo a credit to any studio in America. Eggs are on the rise. Last week they were quoted at 15 cents, but this week 103 cents a dozen Is paid. Salem needs more than one street sprinkler. A street sprinkled once a day is not kept in a good condition these dry, windy days.
