The city Is enveloped in dense smoke, from surrounding forest fires. The fire department has been busy all day in tho outskirts of tho city, fighting the flames. At Washburn a large force of men are at work trying to save tho town, which is In ureat danger. Several lives aro re ported lost at Marengo. The woods along tho Omaha road is a mass of Humes. Tho Northwestern railroad has lost several hundred cords of wood at Ash'an 1, and the Ashland Steol and Iron company has lost over fifty thousand cords' at High Bridge. THE PRESIDENT. LATEST ABOUT THE ETATA. Washington, May 8. The policy of tho government with respect to tho escape of the Chilian vessel, Etata, Is still an ofllclal secret. Secretary Tracy and other officials this morning refused to discuss the matter. There can be no doubt of the fact that the government I ex ceedingly anxious to exhibit all possible zeal In tho effort to recap ture tho vessel, In order to avoid any unpleasant consequences that might arise through presentation of claims for damages on behalf of the Chilian government. It is not possible to get an authoritatlvo answer to the question whether the Charleston will be sent after it. SEEKING AN OUTLET. Salt Lake, May 8. Articles of Incorporation of tho Salt Lake, Halley & Puget Sound railroad have been filed. The capital stock is ?3,750,000. Tho assignment was simply for protection against a run, STATE. A CLOSE CALL. Portland, May 8. A frightful accident happened yesterday fore noon, near Piedmont, by which Alfred Bennett came near losing his life. Bennett and his brother wero at work clearing and chopping wood. The wero both working with axes close together. In some way Alfred made a misstep nnd fell forward, his head coming directly under the uplifted axe in the hands of his brother. Down came the keen blade, striking Alfred's head n glancing blow on tho side, causing a fearful gash from which the blood poured forth in torrents. As soon as tho young man who had struck tho blow could recover from his horror, he called for assistance and remoyed the wounded man to the nearest house. Dr. Boyd, of Alblnu, was summoned and quickly re sponded. He found the young man had received a fearful wound. He dressed the injury, and thinks the man stands a fair chance of recover ing. By a mere chance the blow was a glancing one. Had tho axe come down squarely on the young man's head, bis skull would have been split open. CRIMINAL, ANOTHER JACK. San Francisco, May 8- Accor ding to advices received yesterday Japan has produced a "Jack the Ripper." The man is named Tomita Kanjilo. Ho killed nnd mutilated nis mistress in tno eamo manner us the '-Ripper" killed his victims. Five policemen found Tomita besido his disemboweled victim, but before they could master him ho killed one of them with the knife he hud carved his mistress with, und wounded ths other four severely. MURDER FIRST DEGREE. San Francisco, May 8. The jury In tho case of Sidney Bell, the footpad, returned a verdict of mur- deriu the first degree last night.
