Tn answer to the call of tho mayor u large number of citizens met in the council chamber Monday night to make arrangements to receive and properly entertain the presi dent and his party while in the cap ital city. The meeting was attended with considerable enthusiasm. The following committees were appoint ed to carry out the plans for the re ception. COMMITTKK ON ltECIJPTION. Mayor P. H. D'Arcy, Gen. V. H. Odell, Presldeut Board of Trade .). G. Wright, Post Master A. N. Gilbert, Hon. A. Bush, W. JN- La due, Win. England, C. B. Moore, ex-Gov. Moody, ex-Gov. Uhadwick. The three chief ollluora of the state, tho governor, secretary and treasur tr aud tho judges of the supreme court were made special guests on tho reception committee. COMMITTEE ON ARRANGEMENTS. Hon. E. M. Waite, D. C. Slier itiuu, Frank Davey, E. Hofer, editor JouitNAii, R. J. Hendricks, editor Statesman, Maj.F.E. Hodgkiu, W. M. Dugan. This committee was instructed to begin their work at once and see that nothing was lack ing to make the occasion a complete success. Tho committee is composed of active men who will no, stop short of accomplishing tho designs of the meeting. FOIt KLOUAI, DECORATIONS. Twelve ladies were appointed on a comralttea on reception and floral decorations. The committee is com posed of tho following representa tive ladies of Salem: Mrs. ex-Gov. Moody, Mrs. Win. England, Mrs. Dr. J. N. Smith, Mrs. W. N. Ladue, Mr.-. Judge W. P. Lord, Mrs. Ed ward Hirscli, Mrs. T. Ale F. Patton, Miss S.tllie Bush, Mrs. R. S. Wal lace, Mrs. Geo. H. Burnett, Mrs. J. J. Murphy, Mrs F. E. Hodgkin. THE FINANCE COMMITTEE is composed of five young men of bus! new ability as follews: H. S. riimuti, M. E. Goodeli, J. L. Mitch ell, Jap Minto, O. M. Smith. THE PLAN OF WORK. The stay of the President in this oity being short will necessitate the plans conciso and with few formali ties. Invitations were extended to the Grand Army of the Republic, Oregon National Guards, Sous of Veterans aud 'the school children to take part iu the parade; a similar in vitation was extended to the Second Regiment baud. It is proposed that the parade starts from the depot and be made through the business part of the city, then all retlro to the cap ltol building where the program will be completed. The lloral com mittee will have the halls of that structure decorated with a profusion of flowers. FOR THE FOURTH OF JUIA'. Steps were taken last nignt to cel ebrate the Fourth of July in Salem. The success attending the celebra tion of last year makes it a much easier matter for Salem to have a grand time this year. It is a fact, aud the committee on arrangements had to contend with last year, that Salem has not had a celebration of any importance for several years until last year. An effort is being made to have the state militia to come to Salem to participate in the exercise. To accomplish that end and to raise the necessary funds for the Fourth, Maj. F E. Hodgkin, Hon. Geo. H. Burnett and Hon. 0. B. Moore were appointed the com mittee on finance. MONDAY NIGHT'S BANQUET. Mr. I'easo Entertains tho Heal Estate Men nt tho Willamette The Paving Movement and Other Enterjuises. Tho Salem real estate missionaries who are doing so much to help peo ple to a better land, last evening re ceived a foretaste of that sure reward for all good deeds, and right royally did they enjoy It. During the day Mr. V. S.Pease, who is in the city rep resenting tho Chicago syndicate in their proposed purchase of our horse car line and other property, inform ally asked all the leal e6tato dealers to break bread with him at the Wil lamette at 7:30 o'clock p. m. Tothis generous impulse about thirty re sponded, and in real Salem fashion did justice to the event. Mr. Pease is from Nashville, Teun., and In the course of the evening displayed that genial affiibillty of the real South erner. After the festivities, which were no small matter, by the way, the host made some very generous and ugreeuble remarks about Salem and her people, winding up by call ing for remaiks from all present, and requesting Mr. J. H.Albert to lead off aud act as toast master. A VICW Or" SALEM. Mr. V. S. I'ease (lives Some Informa tion Worth Observing Salem Has a llriclit Futnre. The Journal reporter found Mr. Pease, the representative of the Chi cagi syndicate, at the office of Cook ou .i milium (ma morning aim ap plied the force pump to him in about the following manner: "If it is not ton impertinent I would like to ask you, for the infor matlou of the readers of the Jour, nal, what your people propose to do with the horse car line." "I am tot Informed about the future plans of tho gentlemen in Chicago, Persoually, I have not determined whether I shall be inter ested in the purchase or not, but if I join iu the enterprise I shall favor greatly improving the horse car service for the present. Your read ers will understand that few Hnes of street cars in small cities like Salem are paying dividends. One tliiug I can safely say -our people are men f good business ability, and they will probably do the very best thing with the property when they get it." "iiut, air. i'ease, cauuot you give sonieiuing more detinue, tor exam ple tell the exact date when your people will begin to change the road from a horse line to an electric Hue." "As Lsald before, I am not In formed. I came here unexpectedly to close the trado, with no consulta tion with Chicago parties as to future plans, aud barely time enough to get instructions about detail of trade. I think, however, the Chi cago gentlemen will give your people perfectly satisfactory service." The reporter then asked Mr. Pease if he thought Salem could have olectric fcurvice on the old Hue as soon as Commercial street is paved. "The improvement of your streets is very much needed, Is fact is a greater necessity thau improved street car service. If your people start on these public improvements ot course it would stimulate our people to do something. I would not be surprised it j'ou would see electric cars running tho length of Commercial street as soon as that street Is paved. Remember I am not informed of the future plans of my people in Chicago." "Well, how do you like Salem?" "Salem is the best and most sub stantial city of its size that I know of. Beautiful (except her streets), surrounded by very beautiful scen ery. It has immense resources and can become a city of 40,000 people easier than any other place I know of." "What does the city most need right now?" "Well, that is a leading question for a modest man to answer. Un doubtedly your people had best stick to tho street business until that is settled. Then take up a line of systematic advertising. Have meet ings of citizens and have speeches, get up enthusiasm and pass resolu tions declaring that Salem shall become a city; then go out and act in accordance with the action of the meeting. Excursions will bo very much iu order this fall, afyer your city has a more presentable appear ance. Lots of things can be done to set Salem growing very rapidly, after a little. Let mo tell you that this city has a good set of real estate men, aud if the people will su pport them Salem will boom." The Strongest Safe In Ore gon. Ladd & Bush, bankers have entered Into a coutract with tho Hall Lock & Safe company, of Clucinatl, Ohio, for one of their heaviest weight Bessemer chrome steel burglar proof vaults with all the modern appliances. The safe will be furnished with two seta of burglar proof doors and antomatlo day doors. The bolt work and locks will be covered wltn plate glass to prevent the possibility of any one medllng with them, and to protect the steel work from rusting. The doors are guarded by double duplex time looks. The doors are also tenon and groove with dove-tall, fitting so closely that they will cut a piece of thin paper into before shut ting. The doors aro carried iu posi tion in shutting In a straight move ment instead of a swing, this is done by means of a patent worm and gearing device.
