Your committee have made a very careful examina tion of the ROYAL BAKING POWDER and are satisfied that it fulfills all the requirements which the public can make of a baking powder. Kronen, at (he Kxjx-rlmciil Hln tion, Corviil!l. The detail work of Bowing and car ing for (hu varieties of wheat record ed lp this bulletin, were largely un der iny Hiipecvlslon; litit the work wiw begun by Prof. R. (Irlmm, who p recoiled me us Agriculturist, and who published the results of similar work lustseuson In bulletin No. 4. OIUKCT OK TIIK WOUIC. Tlio object In growing ii largo num ber of varieties of wheat, was llrHt, to discover If jwhIuIo sonio variety that would be more profitable tliau the varieties already grown on the farms In this state. Hecoud, to de termine the ell'ect of u change of soil and climate upon theuharuoternf the product, uh shown by a chemical an nalyslsand nianner of growth. In reaching the llrst object we havo Home Indications which point towurd'very witlsfactory results In deed. Definite conclusions, how ever, cannot be drawn until the va rieties have been grown for several years under like condition. Many of the varieties tested promise to ex cel any of the varieties grown In this vicinity. Al first, change of soil and climate ants very often us a stlin uliuit, which noon loses Its beneficial uflccttt- For this reason we forbear to draw any definite conclusions un til further work has been done. We will mention some of the Indications which further Investigations will either "Stalillsh or prove to I hi false. Ah regards the improvement gf the product tho results are very satisfac tory ho far iih the eye onu detect, Chemical analysis lias not been made ns yet, to determine the changca which havo taken place hi tho coniosltloii of the product. The work of a single season, and In a few eami (lint of two seiikons, has pro duuedvery marked changes In the exter'uar character of the product. In unease has the product deterior ated, and In many cases there has been a marked Improvement. In case of an Imported French wheat, tho product, after two years tral, could hardly ho classed with tho or iginal. Tin changes nro very mark ed. Tho grain Is much larger and has ehangvd from a dark iimhei to a light umber. The change is notice able In several Instances. He vera I Very dirk colored wheats brought from tho catcrn state, have become very much lighter In color. This fea turols a very Interesting one and lead us to tho conclusion which has been very well established before, that wheat finds In Oregon most con genial Mill und climate. The yield was not large, Many of tlio varieties were grown only In small plats, for wo were unable l-.i procure (ho seed In larger iiuulltes. Iiikomo Instances only 2f kernels were planted, Whlld tho yield In no t'Bt was large, yet It was very gixsl under tho conditions which prevailed, Tho ground on which the wheats were grown boro u small crop of fod der corn the season before. This crop wits removed aud cut for silage, und tho gtvuud plowed for tho wheats. Tho gruln was sown too lute for Itul ouoii, Tho extreme wet and cold weather came on, frevxlng and thawing; tho ground over several of tho varieties before they came up. Tho rains beat tho ground very smooth, and when tho dry weather crtiuo It baked the ground as hard at a pavement, thus priMluelug very poor conditions for thv gMwih or tho wheat plant. From tho result, and from Wr ' vatlons, both In tho Held and In Hie plate, we are of tho opinion that hi too thorough pulverUIng or the. gnmud In tho fall Is a lUtrtimu', rather than mi advantage, unless tho tendency to puddle can be over come by applying coarse manure or straw. This season we have hai row d into the soli a quantity of course manure, and shall watch the results with much Interest. No fertilizers wore used on the plants. Home of the varieties have been grown In other states as spring wheats, but hero they wero all, with but (aw exceptions, sown in the Tall. The Martin's Amber is one the varieties which Indicates good re sults In this climate and soil. This variety has been one of the best grown In Huverul of the eastern states, having yielded for several years very satisfactory results; and although It is called an amber it is as white as many of the whlto wheats. It is u llinty white, however. Tho Jleryl Isonoof the most prom ising varieties grown In mini! plats. ThN represents iv typo or white wheat which gives good results both as to yield and quality, Tho head Is largo and compact, and the berry Is medium hi size and plump. The grain docs not easily shatter. There are several amber colored varieties that are good ylolders and produce very desirable results; but thesa aro classed In this market as Inferior to the white, and rnfo two or three cents lens per bushel. There Is a close rescinblunco In many of the so called varieties. This feature will be made u special Htudy during our future work in this Hue. No doubt ininy of the varieties can be classified under one name, and If not under onu name under one type at least. The history of the Wllllts, Hob erls, Halley, Htowart, Ileal and Johnson, will be of much Interest. Those varieties apju'iir to ho very hardy and vigorous, and Indicate good yields. The two originating from hybridizing wheat aud rye, are especially hardy; but tho amber color Is an objection to some extent. If, however, this loot can bo made up by additional yield and vigor of giowth, Mien the objections are largely overbalanced. We only had twenty-llvo kernels of imiili of these varieties for seed last kcasou. F.uough need was obtained to make a test of the yield this season. While It will be ueces.ry to tist tliiwo varieties which Indicate good results further aud on a larger scale, yet wo fitd assured that there are several soils which will glvo very satisfactory results indeed. It Is our Intention at the end of the coming season, to distribute some of the host varieties throughout the state, that they may meet a more extended trial under varied condition.
