Meredith which lies just south of the barn of Hayes & Vercler on Twelfth street, aud will com mence to erect suitable buildlngB on it at once. The company have large mills at Cehuri: and make all kinds of lumber. The mills are in u local ity where the best of timber can be had. A side track will be put iu so that cars of lumber can be shunted right into their building. This lumber yard will , be a valua ble acquisition to the Salem build ing enterprise, as many contractor have beeu compelled to send to Mills City and other points for lum ber to fill orders and to meet their obligations. Nearly a million dollars was expended in the building inter est in Balem last year and that Is ouly u beginning of what will be done iu the next few years. The lumbering mills of this city nre in adequate to supply the constant demand forlunil)er, for it comes not only from Bulem, but from the country around Salem where much progress is being made. This morn ing the police arrested a man giving his mime ns Isaac Mozart. Mozartis wauted at Kalem to answer u charge of horse stealing. He had in his p is ession a bay liorso taken from Hie barn of Geo. Ramp, near Brooks. The nfllcers think the other missing horses are iu this city. Wednesday night some person went to the barn of Alex Scharbach, In the south end of this county, aud helped himself to a horse. lie then went to the farm of Geo. Ramp, near Urooks, and there left the horse and took one from the baru of Mr. Rump. It is very probable the other horses missing from Marion aud Clackamas counties are in Portland. Not Alonk. While Portland Is brauglug on its io-es aud Astoria on its January strawberry crop, Pendlo tou has a word to say. Crocuses are iu bloom in the garden of a lady, Mrs. N. M. Perkins, residing in this city. This is only mentioned as an evidence that wo are having a little weather ourselves. E. O. Salem can also speak.
