The Flih Ii Great Cownrd In
euco of Living Men.
The author of "On Dluo Water," a man
who had sailed much on tropical sea and had
many opportunities for studying tho nature
and habits of fish, treats tho common bo
iinf ihnt thn shark Ii a man-eater as a
superstition. Man does not bavo his dwell
log In the water, and it is only rarely that, i
by accident or design, ho exposes himself
to tho attacks of tho shark. It is not I
likely, therefore, that ho was intended to I
be tho natural and preferred food of tho
fish. Tho writer referred to abovo says
that ho had never conversed with any ono
who had seen a living man attacked by a
hark. Ho eives an amusing account of a
meeting between a black sailor and a shark,
which makes It appear that this fish is a
great coward in tho presenco of man.
Ills ship, an English one, was lying in
Bombay harbor. An enormous white shark
lay sluggishly on tho surfaco of tho water
only a few feet from tho ship's side. Tho
sailors wcro making such remarks as "Ho's
got his oyo on us for supper," and when
this opinion was doubted, they challenged,
tho incredulous to put a foot In tho water
within tho shark's reach.
A negro made a bet of a pound of tobacco
that ho would jump into tho water just as
ho was. The bet was taken; and, without
removing any of his clothing, tho man
jumped from tbo rail plump upon tho mon
ster's back. Tho fish was largo enough to
have swallowed two men, but his fright
overcame any longing for human flesh. Tho
narrator says :
"I have seldom seen any thing so scared
as that shark was; heplunged off, half his
body out of tho water at times, leaving a
wako like a paddle-boat behind him which
could bo traced for three or four hundred
yards where ho dived, and never showed
himself alongside our ship a train."
This jnstanoe would, perhaps.bo met with
tho objection that sharks show a prefer
ence for white men to feed upon. This
common notion has been adopted from ob
serving that tho colored South Sea Island
ers spend much of their time in tho water,
wholly indlfforent to tho sharks which swim
around them. If tho shark is really partial
to white victims, ho probably selects them
from sight, not from taste.
When tho shark gets a tasto of human
food, bo no doubt experiences unusual de
light, and from that timo on is a ferocious
man-hunter.
Tho case Is muoh tho samo with tho
shark as with tho tiger. Not ono of a
thousand of either of theso creatures stands
any chanco of over tasting human flesh,
and bofore having dono so they both stand
in mortal fear of the faco of man.

one night bo got hold of an account of a

their glory. Of course tho paper did it up in
great shapo, and of courso it fell to tho fash
