Those wishing such notices cai leave their orders at the office In this city or at the desk in the secretary's office on the grounds, where a representative of the paper will be constantly on hand. Orders for space or for regular or extra copies of the paper will receive prompt and careful at tention. Twent-Fzvk and Costs. A woman whose maiden name was Murray, whose married name U Guerin and whose court record name is Sarah lirown, was brought up from Woodburu last night bj Marshal Ross and Captain of Police Miuto on a charge of stealing a French plate looking glass from W. X. Chambers' cab while riding therein a few days ago. The mirror was missed a short time after being taken and there was no doubt as to who took it, so Officer Miuto went down there next day with search warrant, but the woman, who is French, had a little girl bide the glass uuder the bouse. Afterward, she threw it into a water closet on the premises. Roes aud Mlnto drove down last evening, worked the matter very shrewdly and found out all about it. The woman theu confessed aud the property was to be reclaimed, cleaned uud brought to Mr. Chambers to-duy. It is ex pected this evening. The woman was trteu in itecoraer Conn's court this forenoon, the result being the assessment of a fine of 135 aud casts, amounting to over $51, which her friends rustled around and paid. Pleasant Visit. Mr. Freeman Fulsom is enjoying a visit from a sister he had not seen since So years ago lost April, until Monday after noon, when he met her in Portlaud. She is Mrs. Heustis, whose home has been in Illinois and Iowa be tween 40 and 60 years, but hud com out to i'uget sound to visit her two sous, who are heavy railroad con tractors on the lines now being con structed there. Her being on the coast was discovered by Mr, Folsoin accidentally. Not loug ago he met a man here from the neighborhood of her Illinois homo aud inquiry brought out the fact that she was visiting her sous on the Honud. Letters and telegraphing did the rest, and the two have been all week talking over old times and their several experiences during interven ing years. It is a reauy pleasant visit for both. What It Contains. Into the central pier of the Willamette bridge just completed there, were- put one thousand and sixty barrels of ce ment. Counting 400 pounds to a barrel, this is 441,000 pouuds or 'J12 to us of cement alone. At $4 per barrel, which is probably about the cost, this makes (4,240 worth of that one commodity alone, hence, count lug the immense amount of gravel and rock, the hundred thousand fast of timber in the grillage, the timber surrouudlug the structure to the top and the work of putting all together, there is quite a sum of money represented in the monu ment. Calvert will have an admir able assortment there from his mil linery store; a Mrs. Logan, of Carl ton has space eugared to Illustrate the powerful effects of a catarrh cure. TUB ART UbTARTMKNT. The bells of his wagon prevented him from hearing the train. The engine dashed by lilsn, almost touch ing th5 rear end of his wagon. A reporter of the Journal visited the E ist school yesterday afternoon uud witnessed one of their llredrllls. The superintendent, Mrs. Grublie, was tho only one except the reporter who knew that tho alarm of fire was to be giveu. The recitations were In progress, yet lu the short time of two minutes after the first Btrokuof the fire koiie every ono of those live hundred pupils were out side of the building, murcbiugtothe time of h lively quick-step. When the alarm Is sounded each pupil, whether at the board reciting or ut the desk, Immediately takes a position standing, uud the march is at once begun through tho aisles into tho wardrobe, theu Into the main hallway aud form there lu columns of four abreast on tho six stairways leading fronthe upper to the lower floor. They come to a halt at the foot of the stairs to allow the pupils on the lower iioor to go out first. The smaller pupils occupy the rooms on the lower floor and are the first to gel out ot the buildlug. When the alarm is given one ot the girls ruus to the piano aud plays a lively quick-step, to which the lit tie teltows keep spleudid time. Iu order to make their system the more complete a few of the larger boys make for tbo hose, of which each of the floors is supplied wltb two sets, and lend their eflortsto put out the llumes. Tliis part U of course considerable of a sham, as there has never been u tire, but the marching nut has everything of reality, us the pupils, nor even the teachers, kuow but there isu fire. Uuder the system now employed il would be impossible for the school to be caught by a fire. Should half the ttairways be blocked by a tire the school could yet get out in about three minutes. Muuy of the pupils are young and this is their first year iu school, and muuy others are iu this school fur the tlrst time and the work Ib a little awkward for them. The superintendent thinks they can shorten the time a little yet. She believes they can get COO pupils out iu the two minutes required for the five huudred to get out yesterday. The pupils seemed as calm yester day as though nothiug was wrong, though it was noticeable that some of the teachers felt a degree of auxiety. m Incipient Fire. As the Rose burg express was coming In this afternoon a fire that may prove serious was in progress on this side of the Daniel Clark place. It was originally a stubble fire, but bad communicated to fences aud con sumed quite u strip. It also caught a railroad culvert, upon which it was making good progress when the train came along.
