Wai.lkxCamp, Aug, 7. 1 Your Newport correspondent haa not found much to report tin past Tew days. When the mercury is In the nineties in the valley towns ex citement will run higher here. As it Is, our day is made up of eating, a siesta, a ramble, comparing notes with each other on returning home, reading the Joimixal an'd going to bed. We have a lire to retiro and to get up by, nnd it's not too warm at thnt, tho' some of the cold-feeted Wulicncampers talk of llxing up "foot-warmers" to lake to bed with them It does grov stirprMngly cool here every night. OLSSOX'S AUDITION to Newport ittsettllut; up quite rap dly with tents and cottages. It aces the bay uud lookt to south aud ast, so enjoys a great deal of tnelter rum the rough northwest breeze hat blows at time?. The pretlj loublo view of water over the blue my aud out upon th? white-waved Pacific, is a constantly changing me, with shifting winds aud tides Ml kinds of craft ply the bay; rude ree canoes of Indiana; row at.d hail oats, schooners, ferry and Califor tla packet. Thousands of sta gull cream and rest on the sandbars at low tide. Crows flit along the shore ind alight now aud then to pick up in oyster or shellfish. Capt. OIs on and his wife and son live in a nodest mansion in the midst of a ;radedaud nicely fenced block right lown on the bay. The proprleter is well preserved Swedish sailor and pioneer of Yaqulna bay. He has nailed to all parts of the world, fought his way through life by hard roads, as river decker, fisherman, lysterman, pilot, cook and any honest way to make a dollar, and now in his prime enjoys a compe tence, aud his addition to Newport is selling at $200 to $1000 a lot and will make him a rich man. Women tdmlre a niau who brings success by uonefet effort and hard work a3 ho has done. His wife is a delightful old fashioned Swedish lady ami has given us carte-blauche of her fine veritable garden. CLAM DIQOEltS. Below our cottage is a clam bank, where at low tide the Siletz Indian women come to dig clams. Each has n wlckerwork basket on her back, nnd if she digs for three hours ! she keeps it on her back, when there may be from fifty to one hundred pounds of the scallopped, spicy bi valves in it. They work with a stick, wading In up to their middle, with and when they strike a clam their hare feet, down goes Mrs. Lo, heuil foremost to the bottom of the bay for the treasure. They work hnnl to get them uud they know their market value. You connot fool au Indian woman out uf :i penny, the chanres are nhe will beat you at a bargain every time. It seems our commercial Jnstinets area relic of savagery. MOONLIGHT SERENADE wan a treat at our cottage the other night, and although the man of the house was suoring off his clam chowder, we were awake nnd heard every one of the soft, sweet strains. The party might have all had their names in print, as they were Saliin girls who saluted the drowsy ears of your correspondent. There wore Misses' Dearborn, Nortliup aud Carr at least, as I learned afterward, a gentleman gultaiLst and several i other sweet singers. The Rcrenad-1 ers were not partial but favored all tho neighbors, mid they wire the recipients of numerous compliments, besides several messes of fish, bas kets of clams and one admiring hearer sent tho house big load of fresh vegetables. A RAltE PICTURE. If the negative had not been brok en, a certain amateur photographer (who ought to bo hung) Is in pos session by this time of a rare and cu rious bceuo ou tho sands that will probably not bo carried out "en tab leau" again very t-oon. Our patty hud wandered down pietty near to "Jump Oft", aud lu the shelter of the rock were quietly hiking our ease, as there were no gentlemeu along. tiiMtio of us were lying tint on thcNind, Rome had shoes oll'und were wading in the shallow pools of warm water, taking a cheap mani cure treatment of woman's most abused extremities, some weiedowu on hands aud knees after pobbles nnd mussels, and in all tho various lude serlble attitudes a lot of women can get tln-mselve Into when there Is uo man around, when one of us looked up and peerlug over tv rock was tho camera fiend. Snap! 1 le had us and was gone. KCONOMIC HKA 1IATHING. As wo rounded a point of rock ou North bench In our dally stroll yes turduy morning wo surprised a middle-aged woman giving her "old iiimh" a choup scrubbing, Mie had him stripped ott and Hhterluglu! olio of those basin pools that are worked lu the wind at the foot of a , big rook by tho outgoing tide. It fornw u cheap and perfectly Mifel lavatory, though Jiul a little public ' for the dltiplay of venerable nudity sho was subjecting her llcgo uud lord to, bho Jurked u red llauuel ' shirt over his head lu n hurry uud wo punned on, perfectly w Ullng titio Uould Ktvo two bit lid. way a any. o w.w their eamp later and learned that they werv ierfeetly well-lfwlo valluy furmers, and RoYal &m AB50IUTEIY PURE Samantha did not propose Joslah should come to the sea-shore and not wash. HOW TO MAKE A MAN DRESS UP. We ladies have quite a time mak ing theouly man in camphe is 0 late addition come to join his better half for a wee.? or two, dress up. He goes fishing nearly every day and comes home to his meals in flannel shirt, rubber boots and dirty trousers. After a big dinner, he sits around in his stocking feet or sometimes bare foot, with 111" shirt unbuttoned at the neck, no tie mi, unshaved and unkempt. After he had been here a week he had to go to Portland, uud he surprirtd us all by dressing up from head to foot. "Just like a man, to drtssup when he goes away from home," was the uncomplimentary lemark of his wife. But it was true. A man will invariably slouch around borne and slick up to go out. After he had been here a few days, and resumed his "neglige" habits of dress, I said I would show them how to get his good clothes onto him and not have him lying around camp a regular fright. "How will you do it?" said his wife. "I'll show you." After dinner I sauntered into the sitting room, casually remarkiug: "I forgot to mention, Mrs. Blank, that that charming young Itnly from Portland whom we all admired so ou the train that day, will call this afternoon," Pretty soon Mr. Blank got out his shaving things; the beard disap-' pearedja white shirt went ou his back, boots were blacked; coat brushed; hair parted; teeth brushed; hat sleeked up; tic adjusted; he looked as neat as tho village haber d&sher. And all on account of my innocent remark about a fictitious young lady expecting to call. I tell you It makes a married man spruce up to bring a summer resort angel before his vision. Nobody called but au Indian woman with huckle berries, but "allee samee" we en joyed the society of a well dressed man all the afternoon. A CAMl FIRE ON THE BEACH was a novel feature of social enter tainment improvised by tho ladies last night. I tell you, our modern belle means business aud makes it m'RUty interesting for the bachelors of the beach. She not only bathes with him in the surf, rides with him ou the beach, tents with him on the tern-hills, aunters under the firs, aud fishes and sails with him on the bay, but she converts her-i self into a siren by the .sea in the mellow nioonlignt. YUtli warm wraps before a roaring fire of drift wood on the sands, guitars are strung, gospel hymns ate sum:, uud no end of laughter and glee! The poets mny rave over charming Hel i ens of classic days, but a right l smart bang-up American girl is as romantic as any of them. WHO ENJOYS IT .MOST? I have been in great doubt whether a family drudge released , from household care, the pale-faced ' shop-girl, the chubby-handed rural belle, the Portland drummer, or the veteran with his grand tinny batlge Was the happier mortal at tho sea side. The conclusion reached is that it is neither of tin fo but aeeitain chubby eighteen months old baby belonging to i lady of our party. He takes his regular daily sen-bath and Is the happiest infant on eartli when llttlo breakers of Ice-cold sea water are dashing about his chubby legs which get fairly red and blue In the salt bath al nearly tho tempera ture of molten snow. This baby fairly dances with joy when he Is nearly finished oil' his feet and only cries when his tender mother lifts aud carries him up the beach to rub him oil aud put ou dry clothes. It Is wonderful how exhllerating surf bathlug is for young nud old, I saw this same baby this afternoon turned loose lu the yard nearourcottugeon a pile of clean white sand. He stood pressing his chubby feet Into the warm sand, happiness radiant on his eouee-tan face. Au Idea was working Its way slowly thro1 his baby cranlum.and ut last au iusplra. tinn seemed to flash over his tiny face. With a grin of triumph, lie dropped down flat ou his naked haunches in that sand as warm us an oven, and no congressman lu Washlugtou feels half so contented as this baby did on that warm tut ml pile.
