A Bad Fall. "Willie, the 11-yeur
old son of Architect C. A. Robert,
at the corner of Onk and Summer
streets, Albert's addition, met with
n polnfnl accident this morning
about 9 o'clock, which will leave
htm a very sore head for wmie
weeks, but still was a fortunate one
In that it did not result more seri
ously. Ho was climbing an oak
tree north of the creek a short dis
tance from home, and had reached
tho upper branches, 15 feet or more
from tho ground when by some
misstep he lost his balance and fell,
bounding on lower limbs as ho went
down and finally striking on
the smalt rocks and gravel squaiely
on top of his head. Ho was terribly
dazed but rose to his feet and walked
to tho house with his little brother,
who was near by. The blood wat
flowing down his head nnd face and
he could scarcely get his breath when
ho reached home. Mrs. Robert was
greatly shocked and frightened, but
hurriedly sent for a physician, who
was present In a few moments and
found upon examination a semicir
cular scalp wound between two anil
three Inches long, on top of tho head
right over the ears. It Is cut to the
bone and the beuo is somewhat
pressed inward, though not frac
tured. The wound was properly
dressed, and by keeping the little
fellow quiet he will bo all right iu a
week or so.
Tub Right Man. Intelligence
of local interest in Salem was con
tained iu ycstorday'fl Oregonlan, to
tho effect that John W. Minto, a
natlvo of this city, for several years
a policeman and chief of police here,
two years deputy sheriff and four
years sheriff of this county, is soon
to become chief of police in Portland,
Mr. S. B. Tarrlsh, tho present chief,
and u former Salem man, being
about to enter the olllce of Collector
of Customs Earhartas weigher nnd
guager. Mr. Minto's many friends
here would llko to sco him in the
position, believing that ho Ih by nil
odds the best man in tho state for
such a place. Ho is incorruptible,
he does not know what fear is in
any senso of tho term, has a
thorough knowledgo of criminals
and Is truo as tho needle to tiio
pole. One very distinct trait of his
character is prominent in tho nows
Item In relation to his probable ap
pointment. It Is stated that ho was
recently asked by tho police com
missioners If ho would accept the
appointment and ho replied that ho
would If he could obtain it unen
cumbered. In other words, John
W. Minto won't wear anybody's
collar In a public position. But if
tho powers of Portland desire a
clean, manly, efilclent pollco force,
they can havo It and be proud of It
under tho ox-sheriff of Marion
county as chief.
Small Firk. At five o'clock last
evening tho lire bell rang again, to
which tho department responded
with usual alacrity. Tho blaze- was

and lodging house, 132 State street,
which had caught from a stovepipe
nnd would havo dono considerable
daniago but for the prompt work of
tho flro companies. As It Is, tho
building is badly wrecked, but them
is little regret for this oven from the
owner, Chas, B. Moores, who was
heard to remark that it would bo a
good thing if that Chinese row were
all burued out. The laundry situat

burning structuto. Tho loss Ih not
very heavy.

The Resolutions Which Were Not
Acted Upon at the Big Meeting in
the Opera Ilonse.
Salem, July 29.
Editor Jeurnal: In the report
of the Sunday mass meeting the
resolutions which I offered do not
appear. They arc hi full accord
with an editorial In the Journal of
the 20th, which I had not nt the
tlmo seen, or feeling that I had edi
torial endorsement I might have
pressed them still more earnestly.
Had they been put to vote, as I an.
ticipated they would De, they would
havo received a largo vote. It
seems to me that for the public
good thoy nppcar In the Journal.
In my haste to prepare them I
omitted an important thought
which I hojKj you will allow mo to
express here, nnd that Is the need
of a Saturday half holiday and of
an early hour of closlnof our bus
iness houses. Baler. i, if not yet
largo enough for this, is fast growing
to bo so. Sunday being the only
day of rest, to n largo portion of la
borers, is in consequence, too full of
demands of body, mind nnd spirit,
and Bomo duties must bo neglected.
More leisure will result In greater
observance of Sunday, in Increased
morality and intelligence. Such Is
tho experience wherever tried.
In presenting tho subjoined reso
lutions, I ottered (when tho business
men or Salem would pledge the
necessary funds) to see thnt on one
half the Sunday afternoons of the
coming year there should bo In the
opera house an illustrated lecture on
science, history, biography, etc, and
that if no ouo was ready to take the
task of filling tho other Sundays I
would also sco that they were filled.

Reselved: That, it Is tho sense of
the mass meeting held in Reed's
opera house, Sunday July 27, that
the best and the only desirable way
iu which the citizens of Salem can
discourage objectionable Sunday
amusements is for them to open to
the public, on that day, such amuse
meuts ns the moral sentiment of the
city will endorse, and thus iu the
spirit of him who suid "Come unto
me," attract to tho good, those whom
wo feci aro iu danger of being led
into objectionable paths.
Resloved, That wo do hereby re
quest tho chairman to appoint a
committee of who arc instructed
to act iu accordance with the above
resolution.
Among the Rolling Stones.
J. L. Mitchell, secretary or the
board of trade, and Clare B. Irvine,
reporter on the Statesman, re
turned yesterday afternoon from
a trip to Silver Creek falls, both
suffering somewhat from their ex
perience, Mr. Mitchell's nllment
being most apparent to tho naked
eye. It seems they, with others,
had been exploring a cave at the
bottom of a deep canyon, tho abrupt
sides of which they were climbing,
when tho head man of the group,
some forty feet In advance loosened
some rocks with his feet and they
went thundering down. One of
them struck Mr. Irvine, making
him cringe with pain, nnd another
oue weighing several pounds
caught Mr. Mitchell on the side of
the head back of the forehead,
cutting a deep gash and almost
hurling him down the yawning
gulch Indeed, he thinks he would
havo fallen If he hud not been caught
by companions nnd assisted up the
hill. The party drove home ns soon
as possible and Mr. M. had a very
sore head, but a physician dressed it,
took a few stitches in it nnd he says
ho will be us good as ever in a short
time.

The Reform School Soon U be Com
pleted. A Salem Mas Gets
the Job.
The contract for the state reform
school was let to Geo. Stevens of this
city this morning nnd the contracts
ore properly signed and work will
be begun at once. The contract was
let nt tho amount of his bid which
was $20,716, being the second lowest
bid D. C. Schcll of Albany refusing
to accept the contract. Mr. McNal
ly, the architect, will superintend
the construction nud will be paid
for his services by the state. The
buildsng Is lo be completed by the
first of December.
Tho recent experience with
small boys has been n strong
cxnmple of the need of a re
form school. Every citizen will
look to the completion of this struc
ture with n degree of satisfaction
nnd relief, when erring youth will
havo an opportunlly to repent.

good cauHo for it. Any small school
boy would know from a hulf day's ob
servation that there are many thou
sand moie people in Portland tiian
that, nud the same Is just as prom
inently true of Salem. But in the
light of their behuvinr toward us a
few weeks ago, there is great temp
tation to laugh ut Portland fellows
over their census returns,

boy named Coy to the nsylum for
insane this morning. He was
brought from Harney City. Also
V. A. Meeker, sheriff of Columbia
county, and his deputy, brought
John C. Hayes from St. Helens,

Getting Well. Andrew Sny
der, who had such a narrow escape
from death at Aurora, yesterduy, as

columns, Is reported by W. S. Hurst
as getting along nicely, with no dan
ger of serious results.
Watermelon Sociahle. The
indies of tho Christian church will
this evening give a watermelon
sociable at the residence of Mr. and
Mrs. W. J. Herren, on Front street,
and a really pleasant time is expected.
This ingenious piece of mechanism
is now exhibiting next to Holver
son's store. Commercial street. It
has traveled all over the world,
drawing crowds of interested specta
tors wherever it turned Its steps and
we advise our readers to pay it a vis
it, as the price of admission is only
ten cents, children under teu years

Jumes Bowker, aged 78 years.
The deceased had no relatives or
friends in these parts and has been
at the county farm the past four
years. The remains will be burled
in the Odd Fellows' cemetery to

Tim Great Show. John Rob
inson's great show was in this city
last Tuesday. The weather was
very inclement, aud diminished the
attendance. Those who were for
tuuato enough to witness the per
formances, were well repaid for their
attendance. There was no lagging
In the interest manifested in the
show. Kxcelleut urtlstB were in
abundance. The riding was tho very
best ever seon in this city. The
trapeze and gymnastlo features
were far above the average. The
chariot aud hurdle racing wus excit
ing and excellent. Mr. John Low
low, the most humorous of clowns
nud jolllest of fellows kept the big
tent resoundlug with applause and
laughter. Ho has no equal as a
clown iu the American ring. It
gives us pleasure to prulso this vast
aggregation, for It Is one of the best
traveling. There are no roughs und
rascals connected with It. Mr.
Low low is a kind, pleasant
gentleman, nnd tho press has a warm
friend In him. The bills contracted
In this city were paid with prompt
ness uud urbanity, aud there was
none of tho "catchy" and clap-trap
which usually follows a circus. Wt
heartily recommend John Kobin-
son to the public Tho entertain-
ment gi veu is worth fur more than
the price of admission, nud If you
have never heard Lowlow your cir
cus experience has been a failure.
