A rather unusual incident in the .il ut'erlnie in Salem is reported from Saturday night. Ah J. S. Krigbnum, who works nt the penitentiary, and ("loll Haydcu, of Polk county, who was in tho city over night, weie no iilg out State street about midnight, ami had reached between Capital street and tho railroad track, three or four men jumped in front of them from tho shade, presented revolvers and commanded them to throw up hands nnd mako no noise. This ediot was obeyed and Mr. Ilnydeu was relieved of his watch nnd some ?20 In money, while Mr. Krlgbatun'e possessions constituted only a revol ver, which wan alfo appropriated. Tho robbers proceeded ahead and turned south on Twelfth street to ward the cannery. Joseph Howard and Krigbatim's brother were n few blocks nhead of the other two, wait ing for them nnd had turned back to meet them, and saw tho robbers going south after tho occurrence. When the affair was reported to them none of tho four being armed, it was considered useless as well as dangerous to mako pursuit. The placoofthe attack was dark, there being large shade trees in the locali ty, m the robbers could not be ob served closely, Out Mr. Ilnydeu says twnof tliem spoko with a German brogue. This, however, could easi ly be assumed for tho occasion, and probably tho perpetrators will never be discovered. Vkhy Bad Conduct. It is re ported that very bad behavior char acterized tho crowd who attended at the comer of State aud Commer cial streets last night to hear some street preaching by tome women from East Portland, who claim to bo entirely dltlerent and distinct from the Salvation at my, but whoso methods aud stylo of harangue would proclaim them at least eeoud I cousins to that nohy organization. This street preaching and its results nro certainly a travesty on the wor ship of God, but at the same time no There has been n great deal of KF.KI.T JotmxAi. win ho , earnest talk going on for some time lu this city in relation to what christians nnd other strict observers of the Sithbnthconsidorn desecration of that dny dedicated to rest nnd the service of the Lord. This agitation culminated lu tho culling of a meet ing yesterday afternoon nt the Pres byterian church, to which were in vited ministers nnd members of all christian churches of the city, to compare views nnd devise means thereby harmful and scandal giv ing amusements on Sunday might be brought to nn ond. me inviiaiiou met a respond from nearly nil denominations and an earnest, intelligent meeting was the result. Of course, there weie several others, nmom; whom were some ladles, but the above embrace those well known to ihe Jouhnai, reporter in attendance. W. M. Kaiser win elected to pre side nnd Prof. Stair to act as score tary, after which Col. Ladue stated tho object of the meeting; that it was in response to the protest of Un christian people of Salem, and many who are not identified with any church, who feel that the whole sale, systematic manner of pro viding boisterous games, excursions and band concerts fur Sunday s-o-called amusement, is a detriment to he best interests of the city, in tha it is demoralizing, deuradlmr and daugerou to the growth of the com munity; a disturbance aud scandal to tho-o who would have the day sjwnt quietly nnd sacredly, and a souice of great annoyance and dread to the mothers w ha-e boys arc liable to be enticed thereby into danger ous company and bad habits. After a prayer by Mr. Corivln, Mr. Rollins addicted the meeting, eull Ingattentiou to the gravity of the situation, but being at a lis to di vine just the best means of getting! . rid of the evil.
