The young men claim they only intended to frighten the Chinamen out of thcro by burning their old log shanty and warning them to skip, and that this idea wassuggested to them by n railroad employe, who held out hopes of work to them If once rid of the Mongolians. Tho plausibility of this appears from the fact that the tools weto all removed to n safe distance before tho shanty was fired. A Warning That Speaks Volnmes Tho Residents on hcty Hill Realize the Situation. A littlo before seven o'clock last evening a Are alarm was turned In nnd was responded to by u full force from tho flro department. Tho lire started In tho barn owned by Mrs. E. M. l'lnmondon, on tho alloy south from Center street between Winter nnd Summer, which had seveinl tons of nay and'n few cords of wood In It. Tho ilames soon spread to tho barns of Mrs. A. F. Coxnnd Dr. C.H. Hail, ncross the alley, burning them all to the ground. Tho flro companies, with their tisilal promptness, wero at the scene of destruction In a few minutes after tho nlarm was given. Doth companies made n hard race to get llrst water. Capitals weie attached first to tho hydrant on the corner of Court and Winter streets, but by some means their hose canio ! uncoupled which gave Tigers first wafer, they being stationed at the hydrant on tho corner of Chemeketn and Winter streets. The rivalry bctw m (he two com panies isl intense nnd is sometimes carried too far during excitement of a fire. Such racing and hllarlly as was indulged In :t the iho last even ing is not to the best interest of tho city or the fire department. Tho s.uno complaint came in again of no water. There was so little force on the hydrant that a stream could scarcely bo thrown to the top of the house and the engines were of little service. Tigers found an old well with a little water In It which they pumped dry. The resi dents in this part of the city justly complain of not having a sufficient water supply for lire purposes. The hydrants are Inadequate and no cis terns arc furnished. Tho four barns which were burned down In that locality should be warning enough to tho city council to urge them to takeslepsto provide some remedy for that part of the cfty. Tho losses are not very heavy only a few hundred dollars to each party. Dr. Hall had an Insurance of J::00 on his bam, and Mrs. l'lnmondon $200, which will cover one-half tho loss In each case. Mrs. Cox had no insurance and loses but littlo as she Intended to tear tho barn down soon to give room for a better ono. At 0 o'clock last night tho second alarm was given, when both com panies ngaln tinned out, but when It was discovered that It was only a blaze In tho pile of snioulderlns hay at tho scene of the recent lire, Tiger engine returned and Capitals put it out. After which, all was quiet again. SOUTHEItN OllKGON FaIH. Col. Robert A. Miller, of Jackson county, Is In tho city In tho Interest of the Southern Oregon district fair, of which ho is tho secretary. Tho fair will bo held in the fall nt Central Point and promises to bo the most successful gathering of the kind In tho state outside of the State fair at Salem. It was a success last year and this year tho premiums aro nearly doubled, footing up to 7000 Col. Miller says there will bo an un usually line grape crop In Jackson county this year, and a good yield of pears, plums, prunes, etc., but the peach and apple crop will be com paratively light. - Thesi: Who Am: Aii.ino. The board of trado met in regular session with President Wright in the chair; Secretary Mitchell at the desk, and a goodly number of mem bers present. Tho committee on consultation with ex-secretary reported his books and accounts all correct, and that they did not 11 ud he was entitled to nnv compensation for his services, but was entitled o $1.73, money paid out by him. The report was adopted. A proposition was read by the sec retary from the Tacoma Staivh and Glucose Company intimating a de sire to investigate Salem with a view of starting such a factory here. The company proposes to send a man here to look up the prospects If the board of trade will pay his ex penses. Tho matter was referred to the advertising committee. Like reference was made of a prop osition of the New York World to send a man here and give a special write-up of this city and country. Thos. Cornell, the well borer, now at Drain, wrote the board that he would be here in a short time to In vestigate tho matter of sinking au experimental oil well. The names of F. S. Dearborn, S. D. C.ilterlin, W. E. Cntterlin and P. II. Kroshus were presented for mem bership and they were duly elected. The secretary's report for the month past showed 302 letters writ ten, 1-187 circulars and pamphlets ma'led and SG02.83 collected. The report was referred to the finance committee, eoiifristins of C. D. Moores, J. H. Albert and W. H. Wild. The secretary was I strticted to draft suitable resolutions to the memory of G. W. Tiflany, a icceiit ly deceased and highly respected member of the board.
