A Xnnher of Lives Lost Methodist Tabernacle Destroyed. and Sl'eKAXi: F.vi.i.S YV11M1., May 15. At L:30 this morning a lire broke out, in a three story frame building occupied by 1'cter Hansen asa saloon i and lodging h nise on Howard sweet, near t ho corner of Second. The flames spread with alarming . rapidity, burning both ways, the I eoullagration lining aggravated by a ' strong breeze. It at onco became apparent that then was a serious lack of water. Streams supplied from tin city water works hydrants j would not reach the top of two and three story frame buildings which ! 'extended from the corner of Howard landSeond to the new Methodist I j tabernacle. A ladder was run up j aud a hose was carried to the top In an effort to thtow water on i the tops of buildings, but it ! soon became o hot that lliemcn l could not stand it. They had no sooner climbed down than the fronts fell In. By this time the entire row of buildings on Howard, from corner of Second south lo alley, was iu flames. During all this time a new Silsby steamer had stood Idly by, there being no available hydrant from which to supply It with water. The wind continued to rise and burning lire brands were carried to the tops of houses a block distant. The firemen now turned their atten tion to preventing the Humes fiom crossing Howard lieel, m which they were unsucv.ful. V ii e fronts of the two-duty buildings across the street, occupied by Tann er Bros' grocery "tore, a M'ccnd hand store, Kroft's tailor shop, the Roatou bakerv, a j.irponler shop, with lodging uptniit, were soon in flames. By this time the Silsby steamer was at work and threw a stream which at onco checked the Haines. On the east side of Howard street the Humes had reached the MethodWt Tabernacle, where the lire was checked after the building was partially destroyed. From the corner of Second and Howard all buildings were destroyed upward to the Methodist Tabernacle. Dr. I.J3.
