A good sized and select audience occupied Heed's opera house last evening to listen to tho exquisite performances of thu Levy company, and theie was general delight and admiration from tho II rut piano notes of Mr. Ed ward M. Shouert to thu last blast of Home, Bweut ilome, on tho cornet by Mr, Jules Levy. Almost every measure of the program was heartily encored, and thu good nature of thu company in responding so often was remarkable. Thu repetitious were so frequently ami persistently de manded as to seem an injustice to thu players, but I here was somo con solation for them In thoso niarktj of appreciation from a cultivated Salem audlenco. Mr. Levy Is cer tainly a great muster of tho cornet, upon which ho executed tho tuoxt difficult and pleasing selections. Mine. Levy Is possessed of a mag nificent voice, over which sho has excellent control and her solos were always received with thu highest applause, us wero also her ducts with thu famous tenor, Mr, Lavln, who Is thoroughly accomplished. We urge our mooted men and large holders of real estate to take advantage of the situation and still further advance that as cendancy by securing a second rail road already projected, and for which other communities nre only watting that we may take tho Initia tive, and push it to success. Active steps should lie taken to secure right ol way and local support which Is tendered all along the line. From Interviews with people from ull pirts of the country, wo are satisfied that almost enough aid can bo tecured to construct such a line, and that more aid will ho given to an iudependaut company, than could tie got for a brunch of one of thu old Pacific companies, or a line that is only to be a feeder of Portland money-shavers and produce sharps. That It would draw oil' a rich trade now tributary to this city no ouu can doubt, and our capitalists and would-be railroad projectors will do well to consider this careful ly. There Is no doubt but that Salem's great prosperity has awaken ed a strong feeling of Jealous rivalry In Portland, and that city will ue Its utmost endeavors to handicap Salem by draining oil all her sur rounding territory and covering the whole country with network of tributary railway systems. Pleasant Rooms. Mrs. U, E Wilson has succeeded in getting her stock of millinery goods moved Into Bush's new brick on west side of Commercial street between State and Court. Miss Bcheeland, her millinery trim mer, has arrived and is ready to wait on visitors with lite newest styles. ItraiONED. Itev. H. A. Newell, pastor of the First Presbyterian church in this city since the full of 18S0, lias handed in his resignation to take effect In the usual manner some time In July. There will be a meetlnix of the congregation some time next week to consider the matter. Mr. Newell has been a faithful, earnest worker and n good citizen in every respect during his residence here. His future move ments are not determined. Lute last evening Governor Pennoyer, State Superintendent McEIroy and Major 8. L. Lovell returned from a tour r Inspection nud observation of the property recently purchased for the state reform school. The party looked over the entire purchase, viewed the various sites for the main building, surveyed the water power and considered tho location of the power house and shops. Tl.cappro prlation made by the legislature is sufficient only to erect the main building, bids for which ure now called for, and work upon which will be commeneed early in June. The board contemplates erecting shops where the various trades may be learned, anil a thorough system of funning and with tills end in view dtslro to determine upon a definite plan of improvement, so that each part added may be a part of the harmonious whole. The power is sufllcient for ull needs, the view from some of the proposed locations of the buildings Is magnificent and If there is anything in the refining influence of beaultful scenery the boys are sure to lecelve its benefits here. If the board is enabled to carry out its plans tills institution will bo made second to none in the United States, acred t to the state of Oregon, and an important addition to the Capi tal City. Serious Condition. David Me Faddcn, Br., is lying in an almost helpless condition, the victim of paralysis, at the home of his daughter, Airs. James Iteunie, in South Salem. His left side is com pletely paralysed and the muscles of his face are" also badly aftected-. Ueing about 80 years old there is little hope of his recovery. Mr. McFaddeu has been one of those good, holiest, harmless citizens whose friends embrace his acqu -int-ances. He has lived hero over 25 years. Passed Aiv,.-Ms. Adell.v J. Leslie, whose prostration wus noted in yesterday's Jouuval, together with n biographical sketch, dlco last evening, aged 78 years. She was a pioneer whose death will be sincerely mourned.
