A careful perusal of the advertise ment calling for proposals for bids, will show that wo not only call for bids for tlio building of tho bridge as It was before, with the addition of eullk'lcnt pier protection, In ac cordance with the plans furnished by us, but ulso for the construction of n combination truss bridge com plete, and also for the construction of an Iron or steel bridge complete, according to plans nnd specifications furnlshcdby the bidder, all the material of the old bridge to become the proporty of tho con tractor, und no material is to be used under cither plan "except such as Is good, perfectly sound and fit for tho purpose for which it is used," all material nnd labor to be Inspected by the superintendent, und the decision of the board of county commissioners to be final. TllOrt IS U good denl of beating golug on In this city ut present and wo hear of more or less In every town in tho county. In tho city It Is mostly done In back, out-of-the-wny places, bauk yards und alloys, Tho pound ing that Is given Is often very severe und causes black und blue marks quUo frequently. Thew poundings huvo caused a strained state of feel ings in mora than one household nud should bo nduuuUtored with wisdom and tact nud nt the most oppnrtuuo time. For four some of our renders may bo misled wo will suggest that spring house-olouiilug hnsopened up quite briskly and the sound of tho caret-beatlng Is tho muslo referrrd to with most ve heuieuso occasionally by tho head of tho family. WantkotoVihitthkOldIIomk This morning a street ear whs mer rily Jingling along past the stnto house when a funny thing happen ed, lu the twinkle of uu eyo the hurso ducked his head, slipped clear out of his collar, bridle, harness nud nil und struck u regular tuyiuo gait for thu old barn. Tho next car came along nud tho two cars cumo down together. One of the saddest accident that has occurred In the city the past few months happened this morning nbout 10 o'clock, in which Ralph, the six-year-old son of Mr. nnd Mrs. W. T. Rlgdou lost hlfi life In u most sad way. "Tho facts are as follews: Mr. Rlgdou lives out In Capital Parknddltlon to tho city on 18th street, nnd this morning about 3:30 the little son of Mrs. Bellinger, who lives Just across the street from Mr. Rfgdoii's, enmo over and asked for Ralph to go over to his house nnd play with him. Mrs. Rlgdou grant ed the request nnd tho little fellows went over to Mrs. Bellinger's, and Mrs. Rlgdon thought nothing wrong until near ten o'clock, when fehe became alarmed, us the son hardly eve r staid away from home over an hour nt n time. Mr. Rlgdon returned from town ubout this lime, und began to prepare to take the train for Jefferson, in company with Mrs. Bellinger. Mr. Rlgdou learned of the Ilttlo son's long absence, and noticing his wife's uucaslnesi ho ut oiipo went over to Mrs. Bellinger's and there was horrlflpd to see Mrs. Bellinger's Ilttlo son standing in the yard by himself and looking badly scared. Mr. lligdou begged of tho Ilttlo fellow to tell him where Ralph wus, but the child would not talk. Mr. Rlgdon at once beeamo seriously alarmed and his first thoughts wore that his son was In tho small ditch that runfl diagonally across Capital Park just ubout 100 yards touth cast of Mrs Bellingers. He ran to the ditch and following Its course down toward the depot, knowing full well that if such an accident had have occurred that tho child would lodge ut the first obstruction. He r.m down tho ditch until he came ! a heap of brush In tho water Jui above the railroad and just west of tho road leading to Turner. At first he saw no sign of the child und stinted to leave, thinking that tho child had only wandered nwny, but to muko certain, ho turned and went nearer nud ho was al most overcomo to seo tho white faco of his child lu tho brush Just out of water, he jumped Into tho ditch immediately and soon had the child in his arms und carried him to tho depot only a fow yards from tho place where he found him. Tho distracted father used every available means to restore his child to life us ho was cold and from ap pearances dead when found. A doctor was sent for nnd Dr. Smith soon responded but u careful ex amination revealed the fact that he had been In thu water ut least an hnurnud nil hopes were gone. Tho child wus conveyed home by friends followed by n distracted father and the scene when tho mother ga.cd on tho lifeless form, was heart touching to tho coldest mortal. Both parents are almost overcome with grief as tho drowned child was their only son nnd tho father had set much lu store for his boy. He would hnvo been six years old the 121th day of May. Hardly hud Mr. Rlgdon left Mrs. Bollinger's until tho Ilttlo son of Mrs. Bellinger broke down nud said that they were playing along the bank of the ditch and all at once he saw Ralph In tho water. Ho was so badly frightened that ho ran to thu houso and hid, not telling a word of tho ocaurreneo. Some fif teen or twenty men were working only n fow hundred feet front whore "tho nccldont occurred nnd hud tho Ilttlo boy given tho alarm tho child could havo easily been saved, for froth on tho brush where he was found, ut most a quarter of n mile from where ho fell In, shows plainly that tio was allvo when ho lodged there. Both boys were nbout tho same nge. Thu loss of their only son ut this time Is n severe blow to his parents. Ralph wasu dutiful son, and thu mother says that It Is tho first lu. stance where ho wentaway without her or someone with him. After tho child was taken home tho parents did not feel satisfied un til a second doctor, Dr. Cartwrlght, was called und made another ex amination, but all efforts wore lu vain. Thu child will bo burled ut Jetler- sou but tlio itinera I arrangements havo not been completed yet. Mr. nud Mrs. Rlgdon hud Just got Into their now homo and were beglniug tw look forward fur a pleasant summer, when they met with this sad utllctlou. Thuy have tho heartfelt sympathy of their many friends.
