Probably few of tho hundrods of Pitts burgh pooplo who hear tho name of "All quippa" pronounced, and road it in tho nowspapors almost daily, are aware of tho historical origin of tho word, says tho Pitts burgh Dispatch. Yet, Allquippa was a namo famous throughout this entire region near ly a contury'and a half ago,-long before P ttsburgbl existed,' and even- before Fort Pitt was located at tho "Forks of tho Ohio." Allquippa was an Indian Queen, and a woman of wide influence among her people. Tho Father of his Country was onco her guest, and his journal gives, a somewhat amusing account of tho visit which ho paid to her. It happened in this way: Wash ington, on his return from his trip to Lo Bcouf in December, 1753, was accompanied by the noted backwoodsman, Christopher Gist, who had also acted as his guido during theijourney to tho French commandant's headquarters. Gist had settled during the previous summer at a plaeo now known as E Mount Braddock; in Fayotto County. Borne years prior to her location on Turtle creek Queen Allquippa lived at a point near Dallas, in Bedford County. "Aliqulppa's town " is mentioned in a patent to a piece of land located there, and may hajje been an Indian village of considerable impor tance. A score or moro of Indian graves marked tho site of tho town, at the timo tho region was sBttled by tho whites. They were mound-shaped and covered by heaps of stone. Misa Myrtle Durbiu, as Gaily GitTord, the heiress, was' equal' to the occasion. Mr. Ephraim Welsner, the poor sol dier in loVe with tho heiress, was well rendered. Everybody sustain ed their parts well, and everybody, was satisfied. Mr. PaUl Jones, of 'Arlington, has" b.en visiting his brothers Bent and Will Jones. Ho returned to Port laud to-day. Mr. and Mrs. Durette of Fairfield will spend tho winter in Portland nee Miss Belle Iniluh. Go Ahead. An Oregon Boy For Japan. When Moses Stuart was called from Yale to Andover tho Yalo ob jection was: "But wo cannot spare Mr. Stuart." The'Andover answer was: "Exactly; we do not want a man whom you can spare;" and the objection is: "Boston cannot spare Mr. Perin." And this Is just why our old friend, Eev. George L. Perin has been intrusted with-the mission work of tho Universalist church in Japan. Mr. Perin is an Oregon boy, and received much of his education at the Willamette University in Salem. His high intellect and talent for oratory made him the pride of hi? teachers and the admiration of his student friends. He was finally sent East to study for the ministry of the church of his choice. He married a charming young lady before his university days Were over, and began bis min istry ill hisearly college days. In speaking of-his adopted city, Mr. Perin says: 'I have learned to love Boston as I never loved any other city, and I do not hestitato to say that I would bo glad if consist ent with my duty as a Christian minister, to spend my days here. These have been seven golden years to me and my family." We in Oregon will think:' of our friend- and fellow student and pray for him, as' ho labors among strang ers in a strange land, for the same Master.
