Around tho rooms, ranged against tho walls are largo vases tilled with uncut Rom's and coins of gold and siivor. I ro marked, howoror, that tho coins werp com paratively modern, and that tho gems cou d not compare in valuo with those Inlaid in tho objects I havo already described. It is probablo that tho exigencies of a depleted exchequer caused tho ownors of tho treasuro from timo to timo to disposo of tho origi nal and moro valuablo, contents of tbo cases and to substitute for them thoso now found there. Tho treasuro contains a splondialotoi largo vases of rock crystal, jado, onyx and cups and flasks of gold, all of Indian or Persian origin. Thero aro also two largo 'octagonal Jars of evident Gothlo origin nnd a whblo series of OricnUal porcelains mounted in gold filigreo work, to say notby ing-of somo beautiful pieces of bluo and white Persian porcelain. Tho middle rooms contain tho Btato robes of tho Bultans, from 1453 to 1839. These aro displayod on headless lay figures, the turbans being placed directly on tho shoulders which produces a very grotcsquo effect. This is moro particularly the case with tho one .roprosontlng tho Inst -of tho Mahomets, whoso state robo was simply tho uniform of a Russian or Austrian General. It is doubtful whother theso costumes aro really tho state apparol of each Sultan, and thero is also reason for bolloving that this historical collection was formed at a com paratively recent date. Thero is, however, no doubt that tho costumoa bolong to tho dates assigned to them, and that somo of thoso belonging to tho sixteenth and seven teenth centuries woro really worn by tho Bultans of that period. Each turban is surmounted by a band somo nigrotte, hold in placo by a jowel, and In each tyelt is a magnificent dagger. Most of those arms aro veritable masterpieces of art.. One of tho carved gold guards Is -worthy of Cellini, and tho handle of another dagger is formed of a single emerald. Tho profusion of stones on tho dagger and on tho aigrettes of tho turbans is really won derful. One of tho latter is hold in placo by a clasp composod of two emeralds and a ruby, each 12 inch m diameter. All tho robes aro of magnificent brocade, so richly embroidered that thoy would stand alone. In passing out of tho troasuro houso I was taken through a kiosk containing tho an .cieiftjllbrarypf thqJ3ultansf Jtcontalns bo twoon two and threo thousand volumes in manuscript, all la leather cases and piled one on top of tho other. At tho timo of tho Rcnuissanco tho eyes of tho wholo of West ern Europo wero cast longingly toward this collection, which was 'supposed to contain the books of tho Byzantine Emperors and to include many unpublished works by tho classic writers of Greece and Rome. No person, however, was allowed to enter it, even a request to bo allowed to do so from Louis XIV. having been refused. It 13 now believed that the collection docs not contain any classical manuscripts, but on this point thero can bo no certainty, as tho contents of tho volumes aro Btill jealously guarded from view. They huddle together on a lounge or sofa and, clasped in each other's arms, sit and coo like a pair of turtle doves. No one is thero to disturb or embarrass thorn. Tho old folks have gono to bed and tho youngsters aro alono in thoir glory. Twenty years ago diamonds were three times their present value. The.discovery of the douth American mjnesand the com petition between tho mines brbught down the price. Amalgamation has put it above 100 per cent, in the last .wclve months. Tbe rough estimate is that during the last few years the output Qf diamonds has been 4,000, 000 carats per annum, and that 4, 000,000 has been spent per annum in acquiring theso4,000,000 carats when converted by cutting into salable articles. These 4,000,000 carats -of rough diamonds only produced 1, 600,000 carats of cut diamonds, aud it cost 10 shillings a carat to cut them.
