In tlio farthest Houthcastcru island oftbo PhUMplno group, Mludiuao, upon ono oFils mountains, Parag, )n the neighborhood of tho highest peak on the island, tho volcano Abo, a party of botanicial and ethno graphical explorers found repeDtly. nt tho height nf 2500 feet nbove the sea loyel, a collowl llower. But ho was still more astonished when ho found a speclmeii in full bloom, nflve-petnled flower nearly a yard in diameter as large as a carrlago wheel, In fact. This euormuiis blossom was borne on a sort of vino creeping on tho ground. Tho natlv6 who accompan ied Dr. Rchadenberg called it bolo. Tho partyhad nd'-scale by which the weight of the flower could be ascertained, but they improvised a swinging scale, uslug their boxes and specimens as weights. Weigh ing these when opportunity served, it was found that a single flower weighed over twenty-two pounds. It was impossible, to transport the fresh flower, so the travelers photo graphed it, and dried a uumber of its leaves by the heat of a fire. Dr, Schadeubersc then sent the photo graph and dried specimens to the Royal Botanical Gardens, Breslau, where tho learned director imme diately recognized it as a species of Rafflesia, a plant formoniy discover ed in Sumatra, andnamed after tho English governor? Sir Stamford Raffles. The now flower was ac cordingly named Rafllesla Sebaden bcrgia. Tho five petals of this immense flower are oval and cream white, and grow around'ccnter filled with countless long vfolMhued stamens, thicker rtftd longer in tho fertile 'flower than in the infertile. Tho Gardener. The Flour Moth, In Ontario, says the Toronto Globe, a new Insect has appeared tho flour moth (Epheatia kuhnlella), which promises serious trouble and fnjury to .millers and (ill others whose business It is to handle flour. Tho Ontario board of health has is sued a pamphlet containing a de scription and cuts of the moth, an account of,its ravages, and advice as to the best measures for its extermi nation. The moth if Is said, came' in with milled goods imported, as food for children from a port on the Mediterranean. There It is a dreadful scourge. Its first appear ance was in 'the mouth of March, 1889,, when a single moth was seen flying near the Ontario mill. In .Tnlv tho moths and worms became bo numerous that the mill was shut down. Later the work of takiug remedial measures, however, fell to the Ontario government. Mr. Blue, the deputy minister of agriculture for Ontario, visited the mill and called 'in Dr. Bryce, secretary of the provincial "board of health, who dealt thoroughly with the question of prevention. He advocates "a rigorous quarantine of grains com ing from Mediterranean ports," and advises every miller to become thoroughly acquainted with tho ap pearance and habits of this moth, and to destroy any that ho sees. , American Geological Society.
