During tho year I8-M there were only 502 patents Issued from the U. S. Patent Office, nnd the total Issue from the establish meut of the Patent Office, up to the end of that year, numbered only 4317. Up to tho first of July this year theio have been granted 400,41!). Showing tiini since tho conmienoo meiit of tho publication of thu Scien tific American there have been Issued from thu U. S, Patent OlUco 402,100 patents, and about one-third more applications have been undo than have been granted, showing the In genuity of our people to bo phenom ena, and much greater than even the enormous number of patents issued indicates. Probably a good many of our readers have h:ul busi ness transacted through tho ofilces of the Scientific Ameriiau, In New York or Washington, and arc famil iar with Munn A Co.'s modu of doing business, but those who have not will bo lntcrvMed in knowing something about this, tho oldest patent solieltlngllnii in (Ills country, probably Jn tho world, Persons visiting tho ofllces of tho Scientific America, 301 Broadway, N. Y., for tho first time, will bo surprised, on entering tho main of fice, to find such an extensive and elegantly equipped 'establlshitent, with its walnut counters, desks nnd chairs to correspond, and Its enorm ous safes, and such a large number of draughtsmen, specillcatlon writ ers, and clerks, nil busy as bees, re minding ono of n large banking or or insurance office, with its hundred employees. In conversation with one of the fl "in, who had commenced the busl ne33 of soliciting patents in connec tion with tho publication of tho scl cnt'flc American' more than forty years ago, I learned that this firm had made applications for patents for upwards of 100,000 inventors In the United States, and several thou send In different foreign countries, and had filed as many cases in the Patent Oillco 'n a single month as there were patents issued during the entire first year of their business ca reer. This gentleman has seen the Patent OlHce from a sapling to n sturdy oak, and he modestly hinted that many thought the Scientific American, with its large circulation, hurt performed no mein share in stimulating inventions advancing in the Interests of the Patent Office. But is not alone the patent solicit inir that occupies the attention of the ono bundled persons employed by Munn &C'o., but a large number are engaged on the four publications issued weekly and monthly from their ofllce, !J01 Broadway, N. Y., viz.: The Scientific American, the Scientific American Supplement, the Export edition of the Scientific American, and the Architects and Builder.s edition of tho Scientific American. Tho first two publica tions an) issued every week, and the latter two, tlie first of every month. Tlio Mind Postmaster. Henry Fuwcett, the blind English postmaster general, who died in 1884, was a greater man by half after the unfortunate accident which de prived him of his sight, than he ever was before. Ho was born in law and lost his eyesight in 1858 at the age of 25 from tho effect of a gun shot wound. At that time ho was a poor law student. Within less than ten years, through constant as sociation with John Straut Mill, ho became only second to the gieat au thor as a writer on political econ omy. Tu 1805, eight years after his misfortune, ho was elected to the house of commons from Brighton, and soon became ono of the leaders of that body. His wiitings mostly on political and economical sub jects, would fill a largo library case by themselves. Ills career as post master general, dating from tho time of his election in 1878 until tho time of his death in 1884, was marked by many radical and important changes in tho English postal sys tem, not a few of which have been Incorporated Into tho postal service of this country. Soven years,a'-;o a number of sal mon, as many Tyneslders will re member, were shown In a tank dur ing the exhibition at Tynemouth aquarium. After the exhibition closed they were returned to the sea, but before being set at liberty each had a silver r'ng, recording tho so journ on shore, fixed in tho dorsal fin. About a year afterward one of the fish was caught with a ily some miles above Hexam. A day or two ago the bpjgist fish Oitbe lot, which went by the name of "Jumbo" dur ing the exhibition, was caught at Ovlngbam and tho ring was re turned to Inspector Harhotte.
