Somo years ago a city mission ary was crossing one of the parks in New York on the Sabbath day and said to a lad, "What are you doing here, breaking tho Lord's day? You ought to be at Church and worshipping God instead of breaking tho' Sabbath in this way." Tbe poor la'd in hit rags looked up at the city missionary and said: "Oh, sir, it's very easy for you to talk that way, but God knows that we poor chaps ain' got no chance." The sentiment seems to be growing that in the United States the time has arrived when "the poor char" don't have no chance." There is some truth in it. The poor are not shut out from making a liveli hood, but tbe gulf between riches and poverty continually grows more diffi cult to cross. As tho country becomei densely populated keen business com petition decreases the chances foi accumulating wealth by ordinary busi ness methods. But tho same conditions vastly im prove tho chances for great success to those who can strike out in now paths, can furnish something to tha world that othors cannot. True merit, in commodity or ability, will win easily and with grand results in this country, if the masses can be induced to recognize it. This recogni tion can only be accomplished by what are pometimes sneeringly al luded to as advertising methods. On the banks of tho Tippecanoe, a small stream which entors the Wa bash Kiverin Indiana, .was fought tho terrific battle of Tippocanoo. In this jn-oat struggle of frontier times, tho allied western Indians un der the chHtainship of Elskwatawa, tho "Prophet" were dofeated in No vember, 1811, by the Americans un der the command of Gen. Win. II. Harrison. It was a desperate, hard-fought battle, and much doponded upon the result. ' Hud tho Indians been successful, all barriers of defence for the early settlors w uld have been overthrown and the eadly tomahawk would have boon active in the rapid extermina tion ot tho remaining pioneers. Un the othor hand the fortnnate termin ation of the contest put an end to fur ther attempts at open warfare by the Indians. The rich torritory, so long overrun by hostile savages, was thrown open for settlement, which rapidly occurred as soon as the newB of the great victory becaui wide spread. Naturally great praise was rendered to the success and intrepid bravery of Gen. Harrison and he was honored in many ways. He afterward served as Commander of tho Army of tho Northwest, and when Indiana was ad mitted to btatehood, he was selected to represent the State in the United States fcenate. In 1840 he was elected President and hia unfortunate demise occurred shortly aftwr being inaugu rated.
