A FAMOUS BATTLE-GROUND. On tho banks of tho Tippecanoe, a small stream which enters tho Wa bash Kiverin Indiana, was fought the terrific battle of Tippecanoo. In this great struggle of frontier times, tho allied western Indians un der tho chi"'tainsliip of Elskwatawa, the "Prophet" wero defeated in No vember, 1811, by tho Americans un der the command of Gen. Wm. II. Harrison. It was a desperate, hard-fought battle, and much depended upon the result. Had the Indians been successful, all barriers of defence for the early settlers w uld have been overthrown and tho eadly tomahawk would hare been active in the rapid extermina tion of the remaining pioneers. On the other hand the fortnnato termin ation of the contest nut an end to fur ther attempts at open warfare by the Indians. The rich territory, so long overrun by hostile savages, was tluown open for settlement, which rapidly occurred as soon as the news of tho great victory bet-am wide spread. Naturally great praise was rendered to tho success and intrepid bravery of Gen. Harrison and lie was honored in many ways. Ho afterwards served as Commander of tho Army of tho Northwest, and when Indiana was ad mitted to Statehood, he was relcctod to represent tho State in tho United States Senate. In 1840 he was elected ('resident and his unfortunate demiso occurred shortly after being inaugu rated. Tho forty-second anniversary of the Battle of Tippecanoe found the gal lant grand-son of "Old Tip" leading his forces to a great political victory which resulted in tho selection of Gen, Ben. Harrison as l'reidont of the United Slates. The Harrisons have been a hardy race of men, sprung from old log cabin stock, which Is a sufficient guarantee of its genuineness wherever found.
