Yesterday evening ii false lire

hose companies were quick in rc

of the efficiency of the water works
In ease of fire. It Is true the tost
was made at an nopxrtune time-
while tho garden hose were all giv
ing forth their ceaseless flow but as
a tiro Is as likely to break out one
minute as the next the test must Im;
considered fair.
Everything worked smoothly.
The electric alarm was conveyed to
the engineer at tho wuter works and
he Immediately put on the emer
gency pressure of eighty pounds.
The lines of hose were promptly at
tached and, deplorable fact, it was
fully three minutes lefore water was
forced through tlicin. When a
stream did come, it was powerless
and inelllcient. After waiting near
ly llttoen minutes No. 12 could get
nothing is'tter than a twenty-ouo
foot stream, wlillo No. 1 were more
successful and threw water from
thirty to thhty-llvo feet. This test

ing. The engineer at the water

was a false one.

work on a tlfteen hundred feet ex
tension of the street railway line.
Tills extension will run to Highland
park, th-roby giving tho Salem peo
ple an attractive pleasure resort ac
cessible by sticet oar. The exten
sion starts at a point near the new
barn built by Dr. Minthornin High
laud park and roaches, the paik
pioper after tunning fifteen hundred
feet. Work Is now progressing on
the construction of their line, and It
will soon 1)0 completed.
The street car company are wink
ing on the fair ground extension,
and alii now ready for the rails,
which are expected to arrive within
a low days. Tho line will I mi com-
pleted at once, and all will lie ready
for the running of win as tar north
as the grounds of tho state fair as

hundreds of strangers and home
ecckcrs who pass through here each
week would then be afforded an op

one can see enough of the city to tell
what It is. Among the passengers
who were delayed here yesterday
many were hoard to sjK-ak in terms
of surprise that there should be a
Ity of such magnificent proportions
here. Thoy had hoard of Salem and
when at tlio depot they could see
nothing, but when the train backed
down to the city their surprise was
turned to admiration.
Salem erred grievously when she
refused to permit tlieO. & C. to come
Into town properly and locate their
depots where thoy should have
been. Perhaps it is not yet too lute
to amend matters. It is impossible
to calculate the vast benefit that
would arise from mich u change.

Jack Miller, the big good uatured
engineer who was scalded when the
train ran into an open "witch near
Albany Sunday evening and was
derailed, died at Portland last even
ing, from his injuries. He was
known along the road in Oregon ns
''Dig Jack" and many are the
friends he leave" to mourn his
untimely fate.
In speaking of his death the Al
bany Herald says: "The death of
engineer Jack Miller, iesiiltlng from
Injuries received from the train
wreck at this city Sunday night,
is a case wheio a brave engineer
gave his life to save his train-load of
passengers. After he saw tlio open
switch he could huvo leaped from
the train and saved himself by al
lowing the train to dash full speed
Into tho open switch, but ho set the
air brakes, revoised the engine and
cheeked the speed .sulilelently to pie
vent injury to a single pucugcr,
but met death himself, after one day
of torture from his frightful scalding
beneath tho wrecked engine. He
was one of the most popular men on
tho lino, and Ids memory will be
cherished by his fellow-workmen
on the road and by the train load of
passengers, whoso lives he sieved."
The remains were taken this morn
ing to Ciivswell, I.ano county, for
burial, by the side of tho-o of his
llrst wife, whoso maiden name was
ailfroy.
