I A straugo discovery 0110 that Is ciuilng the thoughtful to ponder over the written past was niado recently by a French eitlen near Gainesville, Texns. Iluving occti sion to sink a well, Mr. Sonnner, the Frenchman iu question, select ed a spot iu a valley near a ravine of great length, and which, during heavy rains, is transformed into n raging torrent, depositing into the valley, limestone, arnvol, mud, and other debris to. After reaching a depth of four feet, and while in a formation of limestone gravel that had continued almost uninterupted troin the surface down, Mr. Sommer came upon the vertevrae and ribs of an animal. The ribs were about the size of a small pig's and rapidly tnpered. Carefully unearthing the bones toward the. (npcrlug end, Mr. Som mer came to tho rattles which, when counted numbeied beventeeu, the largest measuring six inches across. Attracted by the strange llud tho neighbors gathered In and the work of unearthing the mon ster was prosecuted with vigor. After laying bare nineteen feet of therenmins of the monster of other time, imagino their consternation at finding the entire skeleton of a man of tremendous statuo in tho stomach of tho skeleton of the nuake. Tho remains of the man and the fecrpent, as tar as the serpent has been exhumed, are as perfect as when first denuded of flesh, and were doubtless covered with lime and gravel soon after death. Near the bones of tho man's right hand is a rude stone hatchet, which a geologist of some repute reports to be similar to the handiwork of paleo lithic man. NEW TO-DAY.
