"r TITE CAPITAL EVENING .lOUKNAli. TOE CAPITAL JOUML TUESDAY MAY 111, 1850 Customs of (lie Coroans. Tho lioniu-lifo of tho Corenns is said to be In mrst things a poor copy of the C'lilnctc. Tho dross of the Coroans Is the Bauie as that worn by the Chinese before tlieMnnchu conquest, which made the pigtail obligatory us a sian of submisiou. The only sign of worship seen are wisps of straw and bits of cloth lntn'g in the doorways to delude the devil an 1 Uiep oil evil sp rits. A trace of the old dragon worship exists hi t'.eir toleration of snakes, and it h impossible to get a Coram servant to kill the snakes that drop from the mud roof and slip out of the crev ices in the walls. Until the anival of the American physVians. the King and Queen of Coroa had a per fect army of necromancers and wiz ards in attendance upon them, and these were always consulted in matters of btate policy as well. On a certain day in June, tho strict se clusion of the women is relaxed, and they may go anywhere with uncov ered faces; the homes of foreign residents are then visited by thou sands of curious women. Demorest Monthly. A Singular Cat. Will Harttu of Ited Bluff has a peculiar cat; that is a cat Avilh pecul iar alieetions, her peculiarity being that she had adopted a grey squirrel as one of her family. She gave birth to a family ot five kittens a short time ago, and three of them were killed. The scmhrel was then put with the two remaining kittens, and it seems jubt as much at home as when out in the woods. It allows the kittens, to scramble all over it. and greets its udopted mother very effusively when she appears in the box where the fainilv reside. The foster mother suckles the squinel as she does her kittens, and when the little fellow scampered out on the fence the other day she quickly followed, and catching the truant by the back of the neck, took him back Ainto the box. The squirrel is about half grown, and is'at perfect liberty to go and come at will, but it verv seldom leaves the box. How IUder Hffeganl Travels, ltider Haggard, the novelist, will visit Persia and surrounding coun tries unattended. Ho is an experl w enced traveler and is used to the ways of the Orient. When lie starts off on an expedition like the one he now contemplates he buys a small dog to accompany him. This is the only weapon he takes with him. Ho claims that the carrying of fire arms is apt to awaken hostility among straugeis. He devotes him self to winning the affection of his dog, and says that a faithful canine companion is the best thiug a man can have for a long journey. A Well of Pure Turpentine. Savannah, Ga., May 18. It is reported from Laurens county that a well has been found there from which pure spirits of turpentine is drawn. Tho well is sixty feet deep, and it is claimed that fifteen barrels turpentine was drawn from it at one time. Tho question is whether there is a natural reservoir or has the well been salted with tho manufactured product. IPs ff WW fit? Absolutely Pure. This powder never varies. That was Jackson. Defeated In 1821, both before the people and the house of representatives, he was nominated In 1828 ami elected. Van Buren, defeated In 1840, was refused a renom iuationiu 1844. Cass defeated in 1848, was refused a renomiuation in 1852. Even Tilden, defeated in 1870, as his frionds claimed through fraud and with tho strangest claims on his party that a man could luve, was refused a renomhmtion in 1880. A party of workmen, while ex cavatlug an Indian mound near Buffalo, N. Y., a few days ago, dug up a lot" of skulls which, from their peculiar formation, indicate that the aboriginal American to whom they belonged must have been very little higher intellectually than the ape. The,eyebrovs were on a level with the top of the head, and there was no forehead whatever. No Imple ments or ornaments were founds but a closer search would doubtlehs (lis. cover the accoinpanylug canes and monocles.
