THE CAPITAL EVENING JOURNAL, JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY. " Tito rnthotlc and Humorous Stories de lated by llio Hoorfer Poet. Mr, Riley, who was dining gt an Italian restaurant, bit tho end oil one of those crowbars of bread that aro served in thoso caravansaries, while his listenor, a reporter for tho New York Sun, bogged him to emit a story. Uo finally consented to toll this combination of humor and pathos : " I was wanuorwjr up one or tno principal streets of Indianapolis ono Decoration Day, when I met a rucned old fartnor from the interior vWio seemed to liavo lost his way. As ho wandered aimlessly along 1 nnuroached him and risked: 'Do you en joy tho exorcises of tho dayl' 'Wall, so, so,' he answered; 'but I ain't hero for fun. I como up togo to tho buryin' ground tiD thero on tho hill. My boy's buried up there Ho was In tho army, you know. Ho had to lio about his ago to get in, but tho angels 11 forgivo that ono lio. Lord, how ho did light! I'vohoarntho other soldiors tell about It. TCull, ho went Into tho battlo o' tho "Wilderness an' got wounded awful. They telegraphted to me, an' I went right down. Ho wanted to bo took homo an' I fetched him. On tho way up ho grow worse, an' ho said to mo if ho could livo to get homo an' seo his ma ho would bo satisfied. He kep' getting weaker on weaker, but ho hold on till I got him homo. His ma tried to nu'so him back to lifo, but ho kep' on runnin' down. Ho called mo up to his bed ono night 'bout sundown, an' said, soz be: "Pa, I wantcr bo bulled up in town (meanin' hero in In- gianapolis), an' 1 want you to keep my gravo green." "Hero tho old farmer wiped tho tears from his cheeks with his big brown hand, and then brought it down on my shoulder in a determined manner, and exclaimed: Ah, mister, I'm ngoin' to keep that gravo green if I havo tor paint itr " Ono of tho most affecting stories that Mr. Riley tells is that which gavo him tho in spiration for his pathetic peem: '"Causo I'vo got curvature of tho spine." It voices ; the boastful, cheery sentiments of a littlo ' deformed child who glories in his deform 1 ity, and whoso only fear is that his aunty will not know him when shogets to Heaven, where ho is, becauso there, as sho has told him, ho will bo erect and froo from de formity like tho other angels. " Tho idea for that poem," said Mr. Itiloy, "was suggested by a rough, rugged man that 1 met on ono of my tours. I had been lecturing in a littlo Interior town, and had to get up at daylight ono cold morning to rido to tho nearest railway station. Tho man who drovo mo over was ono of thoso rugged characters that you meet in tho rural regions ono of thoso men who deem sentimentality a weakness and tears some thing to bo ashamed of. As wo rodo along over tho creaking snow ho said: 'I hcarn you talk last night.' I remarked' Indeed I I hopo you enjoyed it.' 'Yes,' eaid ho, ' fust rato. My httlo girl was there. She likes that sort o', thing. Sho's great on po'try, You may hev seen her She sat on tho front row. Sho's a littlo girl, not very tall. You must a-noticed her. I told him that I did not recall having seen hor, and ho centinued: 'Sho ain't very big. Sho don't weigh morn fifty pounds. You see, sho's got curv'turo of tho spine. Her mother died when sho was a littlo thing, and havin' no ono to look out fer her as a mother can, sho fell down stairs ono day an' hurt herself. She nover got 'over it. I hev took care o' her tho best I know how, but sho's never growed. Sometimes I think she'll nover bo no bigger.' Tho tears welled to his eyes as ho talked, lio was ashamed to show tho evidences of his grief, and-turned ; aside his head. Seeing that I was looking at him and had discovered his emotion, he : dashed away tho moisturo from his eyes with onoof tho heavy leather mittens that ho woro and said: ' I dunno what's tho mat ter with my eyes. Ono o' my hosses fo lame, an' I put somo liniment on his log tin . mornin'. I must 'a' got somo of it on tin . yer mitten o' mine.'" GUILTY OF PERJURY. -""I How an Advocate Caught a Witness In I Very CIecr. Way. It is of Warren, tho author of " Ten Thou sand a Year," that this sharp practice ir. tho examination of a man accused of sweat ' ing falsely in a willcaso is related. Tho prisoner being arraigned, and lb formalities gone through with, tho prose cutor, placing his thumb over tho seal held up tho will, anddomanded of tho priaorer if he had seen tho testator sign that initrr ment, to which ho promptly answered tbut ho had. "And did you sign it at his rcquc.il fc. subscribing witness!" "I did." "Was i' scaled with red or black wax!" "With red wax." " Did you seo him seal It with red waxl" "I did." "Whero was tho testator when ho signed and scaled this will 1" "In his bed." "Pray, how long a piece of wax didhousel" "About thro? or four inches long." "Who gavo tho testator th's pioco of waxl" "I did." "Wboro did you get it?" "From tho drawer of his dos,kl" "How did ho light that piece of wax?" "With a candlo." "Whero did tj f ,p.ceo of candlo como from!" "I got it out of a cupboard in his room." "How l.i'j was that pieco of candlo?" "Perhaps 'four or five Inches long." "Who lit Hi piece of candle!" "I lit it." "What With'" "With a match." "Whio did you get that match!" "On tho mantel shelf In the room." Horo Wnrrcr pausedj and fixing his large, deep blue eyes upon tho prisoner ho hold tho will up above his head, his thumb still resting upon tho seal, and said, in a solemn, measured tene: "Now, sir, upon your solemn oath, you saw tho testator sign that will; ho signed it in his bed; at his request you signed It, as a subscribing witness; you saw him seal it; it was with red wax ho sealed It; a pieco of ono, two, three or four Inches long; ho lit tho wax with a piece of candle, which you procured for him from a cupboard; you lit that candlo by a matrl which you found on tho mantel sholf !' I did." " Onco more, sir; upon your ontl you did!" "I did." Removing th6 thumb and exhibiting tho seal) "My lord, it's a wafer." , Itemorltabln Coincidence.
