The First Sale Made By This
During the nine months which have sluce elapsed it has made 107 sales
to 104 different persons. Of the purchasers 85 have bought farming lands.
It has also, during this time sold 61 residence lots in Salem. Of those
purchasing but 25 were residents of Marion county prior to purchasing.

among us. The business of this company is constantly Increasing. More
than half of its sales have been made within the past three months, al
though this is a season of the year when sales aro usually dull. The
company has from 15 to 20 men constantly employed. It lias representatives
on Puget Sound. It has three men in Portland, two ot whom give it their
entire time. Rev. F. J. Strayer, who last year introduced so many immi
grants into this State, is now in the East lecturing and distributing

Harrison's New Plan.
Helena, March 12. A special.
evidently inspired from headquar
ters, says that President Harrison
has adopted an entirely different
plan In the distribution of offices
from that followed by his immedi
ate predecessor. Cleveland did not
take as fiual the recommendations
of tho cabinet in tho matter of ap
pointments. President Harrison is
referring all ofilco-seokers to tho men
- who constitute his cabinet, and as
far as possible ho intends that tho
cabinet officers shall determine tho
men to bo appointed to tho various
positions. This is to bo the policy
of the present administration. This
will take from him a great deal of
caro and work.
Tho Strikers Accede.
Portland, Or., March 13. The
strike on the O. It. & JS". has ended.
Yesterday tho engineers' association
held a meeting, aud resolved to go to
work at tho old wages, tho company
having given a written pledgo to
take back all tho old employes at
tho same wages. Tho pilots and
mates' association also decided to
return on being shown it telegram
from General' Manager Holcomb
stating tliat if the company's terms
wero not accepted ho would imme
diately start h crew of competent
men from tho East to fill their places.
All the boats are running-to-day.
Tho Cruiser Charleston.
San Francisco, March 12.
Naval Contractor Feruald, who Is
superintending construction of tho
Charleston, said ho had received no
orders from tho secretary of tho
navy, but had received it telegram
from tho chief of construction of tho
naval bureau, asking when tho
Charleston would bo ready for trial.
Mr. Fernald said tho Charleston
would bb ready for trial In (lvo
weeks, but in ease of necessity
would be ready in two wwoks, and
her armament would be mounted in
ten days additional.

Alhany, Or., March 13. In tho
circuit court yesterday tho case ol
Bilyeu, Woodln, Strong & Co. vs.
Dr. E. Q. Smith, for possession of
the lted Bull mino in the Sunt lain
district, which was decided in favor
of plaintiffs in JtiBtico Humphrey's
court and taken up to tho circuit
court on an appeal, wtts dismissed
at the cost of defendant. This de
cision Is In favor of tho Alhany com
pany. Tho case will probably bo
appealed.

sionaries recently captured by tho
insurgent Jiavo been released upon

into negotiations with tho Germans.
A Mucli-lrrled Man.
Kansas City, March 12. Hiram
Adams, a colored deputy constable,
shot and killed Samuel Patterson,
a colored barber, In a quarrel over a
accent dice game this morning.
Several hundred negroes visited
Adams in his coll during the day,
among them ten women, each of
whom claimed to be his wife.

to satisfy themselves as to tho best
means of executing condemned
rnmlnals by electricity.
Several dogs were killed with an
alternating current at from COO and
700 volts for ten seconds. Four
calves, of approximately tho weight
of n man, wero killed at 800 volts
pressuro for contacts of from fifteen
to twenty seconds. An 830-pound
horso then took th'j alternating cur
rent In tho same way at 1000 volts
pressure and died. In every caso
deatli was Instantaneous and with
out a sound or a struggle.
