In nu artlclo on a prospective
boom for Salem, the East Portland
Vindicator says: "But the most im
portant move that has been made to
advance the interests of Salem and
the central part of the "Willaniotto
valley, is for a railroad from the city,
connecting with a lino soon to be
put in course of construction from
Astoria to Tillamook. The opening
of the road is assured by the ncces
eity for 'its existence. The wholo
line will pass through the richest
portion of the state and develop an
Immenso body of agricultural land
now covered with forests of valuable
timber. The people of Salem have
reason to congratulate themselves on
the brightness of their future pros
pects, and a spirit of laudable, legiti
mate enterprise, which will benefit
tho whole people, has given now
life to tho Capital, that beautiful
Chomekcto of the state."
An Infant Industry.
Passing along Commercial street
our attention was attracted to a
8inall hand manufactory of tho
standard fence. Hero is the hum'
bio beginning of what must prove
ero long to become a big tiling.
Even now there is demand for much
more than can possibly be turned
out by this establishment. A dozen
such machines could be run by a
small coal gas engine such as prints
tho Cincinnati Enquirer and runs
twenty or more sowing machines to
bind shoes. Tho fences are cheap,
durable, and the best substitutes for
tho very objectionable barbed wire
ones. These manufactories are the
things one likes to see.

sends an inquiry to Salem, concern
ing his brother Win. M. Davis, who
formerly operated Davis' Ferry, near
Salem. Tills ferry is now known as

dead, as he has been unable to hoar
from him for many months. Tho

birds aro rejoicing and all tho signs
of advanced spring, as tho eastern
people call It, aro hero as a matter
of course.
A BLAZE AT MARION.
Peacock's Store, Together with
Contents, Destroyed by Fire.

On Wednesday evening tho usual
ly quiet little village of Marion was
thrown into a state of wild excite
ment by tho cry of fire ringing
through the streets. Rushing to the
scene of the alarm, flames were seen
leaping from tho store room of W.
B. Peacock. Tho fire had gained
such headway before discovered that
nothing could bo saved, as the city
was unprepared to fight the ele
ments. The fire was first discovered by
Mr. Matthews, but he was unable to
do more than give tho alarm. The
store, with entire contents, was dls
troyed, causing a loss to Mr. Pea
cock of about $1500 above insurance.
It is not known how the fire origin
ated, but a defective flue is supposed
to have been the cause.
No More Smallpox.
For tho first tlmo since September
19th last thero Is not a case of small
pox in Marlon county which is once
more free from tho scourge. Of the
dozen or fifteen eases thero have
been but two deaths, thoso of the
Laehappcl children.
Looking up a llrlst Mill.
F. L. Delaware writes from Ren
kohnan, Nebraska, that ho is desir
ous of locating in or near Salem and
engaging in tho milling buslnoss.
Ho wishes to purchase a mill or start
one where thero is a demand. His
intention is to soon remove to Oregon.

A .New Stage Line
Petitions are in circulation and ar
rangements are under headway for
the establishment of a stage route
from Salem to Silver Creek Falls.
It Is proposed also to establish a
mail route on this line, specifica
tions for which are now ponding be
fore tho postal department.

Mrs. Emma Mnlloy-Barrett, the
revivalist who has been ill for a few
days at tho home of James Ratehe
lor and wife loaves tho city to-day,
for Harrlsburg, whore she begins
another series of revival meetings
with Rev. D. T. Sunnnervlllo. Mrs.
Barrett and Mrs, Batcholor are old
Indiana friend- and schoolmates.
Baa Walks.
It becomes our duty to say a few
words about the condition of our
sidewalks. In a number of places
they are getting in a decidedly
precarious condition, and on a
dark night it is very dangerous to
go over somo of them. Tho planks
have become rotten and uneven and
many aro misplaced. Taking it
altogether our street commissioner
should get to work on the walks, for
If the matter is not attended to soon
some of these days the city will
have a damage suit on its hands, for
a oroken limb or something of that
character. Salem should have bet
ter walks. The present ones aro
not very impressive to a stranger's
eye.
An Old Lady's. Accident.
Yesterday Mrs. E. Woods, of
North Salem, tho aged mother of
H. W. Hatch, head miller in the
Salem Flouring mills, met with a
painful accident which may confine
her to her room for somo weeks.
Sho is nearly seventy years of age,
and quito feeble. She had finished
washing the dishes and in throwing
the dish-water over the railing of
the back porch her foot slipped and
she fell to the floor, breaking her
arm. She was not found at once
and laid on the floor sometime be
fore her accident was discovered.
The fractured member was prompt
ly set and she is now improving
quite nicely.
Salem s Amended Charter.
Last night the city council had
under consideration the question of
the amendmentof tho Salem charter.
A bill was prepared and proposed in
the Senato this morning. Tho bill
contains a clause allowing tho city
to issue bonds and create a debt of
$25,000 for the construction of sowers
and water works, tho same to be
exempt from taxation. Also one
providing for tho construction of a
pest houso outside of the city limits.
Another concerning the regulation
of street car lines. And another
making thirty days' resideneo in a
ward necessary before a voter is
qualified.

In tills morning's dispatches from
Washington is the welcome news to
democratic hearts of tho confirma
tl m by the senato of tho apppoint
ment of Richard II. Dearborn as
postmaster of Suleni. His nomina
tion was beforo the senato early In
December and after so long a delay
has been acted upon. Mr. Dearborn
will rcceivo ills commission within
a fortnight and it Is expected he
will take charge of the affairs of the
office within a month.
