ant. Wo know nothing about it,
but wo do know that, except the
English sparrow, most birds are
useful. The catbird is tho especial
detestation of small minded raisers
of sour cherries. Wo have scon a
whole region desolated by th6 tent
caterpillar of its trees saved by the
introduction of a few cherry trees
which culled the catbirds. A pair
of catbirds will in a few hours de
stroy right and left hundreds of cat
erpillars nests. During a few
weeks these birds consume cherrios.
Such birds as quail and pheasants
destroy during the year nearly all
the injurious insects in tho fields
around them. But ono colony of
English sparrows will drive away
all other birds in the neighborhood
save the jays and screech owls. It
is said that these little owls will con
sume the sparrows at night and are
the only means of keeping them
down. Wo know that whenever
the sparrows are allowed to come
every song bird disappears and that
a small number of them will destroy
a largo field of wheat. In England
bovs are hired to kill them and the
expense of keeping them thinned
out is quite a large item. In ten
years a few pair introduced in an
Eastern town have spread their
kind over tho whole union.

Ohio valley tho greatest, most re
nowned practitioners of that school
slayed those fever patients rightand
left as fast as they visited them.
Soon they observed that the few
typhoid-patients that escaped were
treated by those who gave no medi
cine. This hint they gladly accepted
from tho quacks as they have all of
their most cfl'cctual remedies.
We would advise our legislature
to be exceeding warry how they go
into the business of aiding tho busi
ness of orders of men, of professions
or traders. Under tho pretext of
guarding the innocent nobodies the
cunning schemers of several some
bodies are forwarded. Don't do it.
If there is ono profession on earth
that the whole people are more deep
ly interested in than- any other in
these states it is that of The Law,
for tho simple reason that their
judges must be men "learned in tho
law ;" that their rights and liberties
depend often on the judjje's wisdom;
that one branch of this great general
government Is the judiciary and is
the inheritance of that profession,
and that by custom tho legislative
Branch is that Profession also, and
yet wo leave that body in which all
arc so deeply interested, the Bar, to
bo entered by almost every and nuy
one who has tho etrrontery to call
himself a lawyer we' allow that
nursery of ono, if not of two
Branches of all our glorious galaxy
of governments as well as of the
national, to become tho harborage
for all sorts of pretenders, without
character or learning, honor or fidel
ity, to rub against the most worthy
and elevated of its memberhood.
If wo can do that wo can surely
leave all other occupations to their
natural development.
