There are to be found in every town a very con siderable proportion of business men who are ready togivo their tlnio and labor to the organization and main tenance of boards of trade, establish ment of strcetndlways, cold stor ages, railways, woolen mills, or any other movemont for the attraction of outside enterprise and capital, and whom it is even not dillicult to Induce to subscribe money lor the establishment of promising enter prises, but nevertheless contribute little or nothing to a means of great er importance and efilcieney in the building up of their town-the sup pjrt and Improvement sf its news papers. Thcro i no question but that the newspapers of any town or city may bo made the most ell'ectivo possible agoney In its development and prosperity. The ell'orts and Inllii enco of either individuals or organ! tious arc- at best but spasmodic and transient, but the newspaper works on steadily and incessantly. The individual agitator reaches only a comparatively limited field of oppor tunity only those to whom the particular ellbrt may be extended hut the newspaper reaches out in every direction and carries IIh intlu once to hosts of unknown and un suspected watchers of opportuni ties. Among shrewd, Intelligent men of uHairsthe character of n commun ity Is measured more by the stan dard of its newspapers than perhaps by any other slnglo indication. With allttlcobservatlon and expe rience a remarkably just estimate of the characteristics of n town may bo reached by an Inspection of its news papers. If the community is a live, pushing, liberal one, tho colunnm of Its newspapers will bo found crowd ed with tho advertisements of Its mercantile and professional men. If these announcements arc absent the- Investigator will naturally set tho town down as containing a slow, mmnibltloiiH, I unprogrosslvo ' com munity. And without such sup port in a liberal measure no news paper tun do Justice 'either to Its town or to tho ambition of Its publisher-. It is quite safe to assert a nows mwr is rarely found inadequately representing tho consequence and enterprise of Its community. Tho oasos are exceptional Indeed In which a community deserves bettor newspapers than It possesses, or In which tho local newspapers do not ilattoriugly reflect theactual charac ter of the community. They represent the character and merits of the community far moro exactly , than they do the energy and enter prise 6f(their publishers, or the abili ty andambltion of their editors. It is within tho power of tho business men of any community to push their newspapers forward to a stand ard impossible of attainment by any clTort of the publisher without their co-operation and in no other direction can an enual measure of ellort and expenditure bo applied with anything like equal effect in advancing tho Interests, not only of the community at largo but of-the individual business man himself.
