W. II. HYAKS -ULAKK I!. IUVINB Editor Manager. IS MII.IC HAKr-TIirUL? Not long bIuco n somewhat sensn tional report nuide by a German sol entist (Dr. Klein) in regard to the nature of an outbreak of scarlatina through tho milk of cows in tho En glish town of Ilcndon caused much alarm among health boards, milk inspector?, and other easily disturb ed persons. A thorough and com plete supervision of dairies was de manded, and much suspicion was aroused in tho midst of a great many consumers of milk. Now, after careful Investigation, it has been ascertained that no evidence) whnt ever la found to support tho theory advanced in regard to tho Infection of milk Inthocaso referred to, ex cepting tho very doubtful testimony of Dr. Klein that some "micro org nnisms" found in tho ulcers upon tho cows' teats were of the same kind as others found in tho blood of tho scarlatina patients. So that tho ciiho depends upon tho Iden tification of tills germ, and not only this, but satisfactory proof to con nect tho cows with the original in fection. In tho inquiry Instituted by tho English Government, and which is now published, it was dis covered that porsons nd'ected by scarlatina visited tho Ilendou dairy and might easily havo conveyed tho contagion to tho milk. Prof. Drown who conducted tho examination, states that tho milk of several cows upon whoso udders were uh'ors sim ilar to those on the Hendon cows did not communicate any disease to tho poisons who consumed it. Tho whole business seems to have been made up of a number of cows affected by tho frequent cowpox, which causes pustule" and sores upon tho teats and udders, and an outbreak of scarlatina duo to some ordinary onuses, in tho name local ity, and out of this small molehill a mountain was constructed by tho very common process of inflation and exaggeration. It has been tho fashion of late years to charge" every epidemic outbreak to tho milk used, but not one charge has been support ed by evidence weighty enough to hang a vory bad dog upon. Imagining an observer to bo con veniently stationed in space and scrutinizing tho earth as it turns on its axis, we nuy supposo him to be struck with tho fact that water cov ers eleven-sixteenths of tho surface, ami that the, laud is ho unequally distributed that from one point of view he would see a hemisphere al most exclusively oceanic, nearly tho wholo of tho dry land being in the opposite hemisphere. With a know ledge of tho rock formations, our Imaginary observer would notice that those bordering tho North At lantic aro of great age, while many of the l'aclfle ranges wo compara tively now, from which ho nilght be led to believe that tho Atlantic, though comparatively narrow, Is an older feature of the earth's sur face, tho Pacific belonging to much more modern times. Not thousands of millions, but prob ably millions of millions, of suns exist within the limits of the sider eal system. Rather I ought to say they exist within the limits of our sidereal system, for doubtless this system is no more to bo regarded as slnglo within tho universe than our solar system is unique within the star depths. Every star tells us of a sun, and probablyof a solar sys tem, in such sort that wq must re cognize thousands of millions of so lar systems in the galaxy. May we not fairly assume, then, that in like manner our sidereal system is repeat ed millions of millions of times within some system of a higher or der? That system may in turn bo reneated many millions of times within a system of a higher order. And so on. to higher and higher orders, absolutely without end."
