and Mr. Byars was at work with
his forco on tho Queen Anno Addi
tion. All these surveyors aro work
ing close together and it really
demonstrated tho fact that Salem
was on tho verge of a boom.

Mrs. Emma Unrret (iieo Malloy)
addressed another largo congrega
tion at tho M. 13. church last night.
Although a woman of a moat check
ered career, she has great powers as
an evangelist and does good work
wherever sho gobs. 'Her labors as a
revivalist havo been mostly among
tho prisoners and gross offenders.

many guests and friends of the
orders who had assembled to witness
the' Installation of ofllcers and the
dedication of their new home.

Following the order of business a
banquet was spread by tho ladies of
the Relief Corps and tho gay assem
blage partook of tho sumptuous re
past before them. Their friends
and invited guests were heartily
welcomed and made to feel at homo
in that cordial manner known only
to tho ladies of tho Relief Corps.
Home Scalp Items.
A. M. Mulkoy of near Mehama
was down to-day and brought with
him a wild cat scalp, for which ho
obtained tho bounty of $2. Ho also
killed a bear a few weeks ago, but
did not bring its scalp, as ho wished
to prescrvo the hide in toto. He of
course received no bounty for the
bear, as the scalp was not produced.
This is necessary, as tho county
clerk must destroy such scalps.
Thero aro somo queer occurrences
In connection with this scalp and
bounty business. For Instance, a
few days ago a littlo boy camo in
with about twenty ground squirrel
scalps and claimed his reward.
When told that thero was none, ho
was moved to tears. Ho said ho had
worked pretty hard to catch them
and somebody had told him lib
would bo paid.
In October one man brought in
Bovontecn cayoto scalps. These an
imals ho had killed by placing
strychnine where thoy could got It.

F. J. Strayer, who Is now on Pu
get Sound assisting in turning the
tide or Immigration Oregon and Sa
lamward, recently visited tho capi
tal for a few days. Ho says Salem
is enjoying a period of fino prosper
ity, and overyono seems happy and
contented. Further up tho valley,
tho country Is very flue and the
land very good and prices generally
moderate. Ho finds tho country
around Salem unsurpassed in beauty,
tho sceucry highly picturesque, nnd
tho land among tho best. Thero is
plonty of it and prices aro very rea
sonable. While- ho found muoh
beauty wberovor he wont, after
spending a few days In Salem ho
remarked, as do all others, that, "Sa
lem takes tho prize foi pretty girls.,"
The fifteenth Session.
The fifteenth biennial session of
tho legislative assembly of Oregon
will begin noxt Monday. Already
legislators aro beginning to arrlvo
and by tho latter part of tho week
It Is expected many will be In tho
city. Hon. R. A. Miller, Jackson
county's democratic representative,
has been In the city for several days
and will not return homo before
iho Session. To-day Hon. J. W.
Maxwell arrived In tho city from
Tillamook, which county he will
represent In the assembly.

At a poultry show held in Victor

remove the capital of Arizona from

on each side money is being cor

is traveling northward, and there

in many a community north of tho
southern Oregon line.
The circulars sent out by the Al
pine club asking for signatures to
tho petition to be presented to the
state legislature for the enaction of
laws for the prevention of deer kill
ing still continue to come iu. Tho
petition is already 132 feet In length.
This is the longest petition ever
sent to the legislature in this state.
A curious illustration of how far
dust is carried, says the Astorlau, is
afforded by tho fact that when tho
east wind blows continuously, as it
