MclllllllK, Secretary ofStnte. An unusual number of congratu latory letters to Gen. Harrison are arriving from the South. Many are from democrats who state t lint al though the result is contrary to their wishes they accept the people's verdict with good grace, not a few oven stating that they believe the result of the election will prove Injudicial to the South. The present modo of electing the president by the people Is not pro vided for in the Constitution, and Indeed Is squarely opposed to the method which the Constitutional Convention of 1787 Intended. That body meant to have electors, as n coui'uutv of wise nml experienced men, who know what was best for the country, themselves select the best man for president. They were Intended to elect, to hnvo power, and not merely to transmit. Only one prv-ddent was ever chosen nfter the fashion Intended by the makers or the constitution. Tins was George Washington. And the only reason why ho was so elected was that there could not le any tliverguient in his case between the will of the people and the Judgment of the electors. Kach of our American heroes hns lived the material for a novel, ami the sucoohSOH and disappointments of their love affairs would make a library ofiuterenting story. What can be more pathetic than the life long disappointments of Janice lluoliunu.il, John Randolph and Al uxtiudor H. Stephens? Buchanan's fcweothoArt tiled during a lovers' tmarrol, and his bachelorhood ive tmme her monument. Alexander 31. Stephens, disappointed In his ohool-boy love, refers often to her hi his hitter of a Umg life of single bK-ft0tlutM- and John Randolph, the moody, unhitppy. erratic genius of RouNoke, UimeriHK for yearn on the verge of iiimiiilty, speaks of Murk Ward "as one whom he loved hotter than his own soul or Jlun who created It.'' The rc-hnbllimcnt of the nncicnt city of Jerusalem hns been the dream of ontlui-instic religionists, during all of the ages of tlio Christian ern. Recently that tden 1ms taken some what a coiiiinerclul easto, anil it now appears that, to a certain extent at least, it is being accomplished. The London News says the "Ixxim which was recently started in Jeru salem still appears to hold its own. Several handsome public buildings have been erected on Mount ion. The Rothschild Hospital for Jews on n neighboring hill is a striking building, although its cruciform shape is a source of grief to faithful Jews. A girls' school has been built by Italian", and a stately building for Itii-slan pilgrims is now in course of erection. Similar building- for (icrman, French and Italian pilgrims are already erected. On the top of the Mount of Olives the Rui-wians have built an ugly tower with the sole object of seeing tlio Mediterranean and Dead seas from its ton; but their church in (ictliMMiiuuc makes up in beauty for the ugiinc-M of the tower. A company of German protestants, calling tlienwelves 'The Friends of the Temple,' which lias been in existence for many years, is now to take deliuite steps for the restora tion of tlie ancient temple.'' Jinxii: dunny's iunr. I Judge Denny has apparently suc ceeded in stirring up tilings in Seoul since the Chinese resident has been ordered to leave. Denny gave the Corcan King some good advice in the late unpleasantness in Seoul, and the result has been a complete rupture with Viceroy Li, who originally secured him the position of confidential adviser to the King. The Viceroy, according to a cable front Shanghi, lias now demanded the dismissal of Denny. If the Corcan King refu-cs the question i.f suzerainty will have to be settled I by force, unle-ssome foreign power! like Russia should interpose and check China's plans. ANOTIII'll TIIKOllY. The latest theory of the AVhite ehapel minders seems the mo-it' plausible that has yet been advanced. ' It is that the criminal is a butcher on one of the barges that bring live ' cattle to London, and that when- ever lie comes to the city he iilllts i his passion for blood by murdering a woman of the town and mutilat ing her body. His trade as butcher would account for his experience in dissecting the body as well as his callousness to the mutilation that sickens everyone who looks upon It. If the police devote themselves to this clew they will narrow the Held Immensely, and thus have some prospect of discovering this phenomenal criminal. KNM1HT IN COUNCIL.
