passengers thai escaped. Several
were scalded to death while fasten
ed to their seats by tho debris.
There were nearly 0000 people
from Liuorno and Luokawnno
counties In tho excursion at Hazel
ton. There were seventy-eight cars
from Wllkesbarre. Tho sections
wero crowded to suH'ocatlon, fur
nishing conditions for a terrible loss
of life. Tho third section of tho
excursion train had stood on tho
track a few hundred yards from
Mud Run, waiting for tho sections
ahead to get out of tho way. Tho
flagman, some say, had been sent
back with a lantern to guard tho
train from tho rear.
Suddenly tho passengers on the
rear platform saw a train approach
ing at a high rate of sju'ed. Several
jumped and escaped. In au Instant

tho Interior of tho Ill-fated rear oar.
There was a frightful crash and tho
engine plunged full length Into tho
crowded mass of humanity. Tho
shock drove the rear car through

was crowded with maimed and
