At the moment of tho collision one of tho boilers exploded and was hurled a distance of 100 feet mid In creased tho casualties Both engines were totally destroyed. Tho re publican demonstration to-day was ouo of thu largest and most success ful ever held lu Indiana. Early trains poured their thousands Into tho city. Nearly all of the llfteen railroads ran special trains. Home of the roads were not able to bring all tho passengers who desired to come. Not, leas than a thousand ox'tra passenger coaches were em-, ployed. It Is estimated that by noon over 00,000 visitors had arrived Allot llur Ciilllaliiii, Canton, Ohio, Oct. 11. A passen ger train on the Cleveland, Lorain it Wheeling road collided with a freight near Massillou, Ohio, tills morning. Both engines, two pas senger coaches and several freight cars were completely wrecked. Richard Whitman, a brakemau, and Warren Richards a passougor, were fatally hurt. Oeorgo It. Tho stato claimed the land on the ground that It was swamp and oversowed, but the proof showed that while It was overllowed by reason of Its being located on the mountain, and snow melted lu summer, said overtlow from tho melting snow so irrigated tho laud that It was regarded as valuable; -otherwise It would bo valueless. Not a slnglo person escaped from tho rear car. Tho second was crowd ed with maimed and bleeding ladles and tho third ear had but a few passengers thai escaped. Several were scalded to death while fasten ed to their seats by tho debris. There were nearly 0000 people from Liuorno and Luokawnno counties In tho excursion at Hazel ton. There were seventy-eight cars from Wllkesbarre. Tho sections wero crowded to suH'ocatlon, fur nishing conditions for a terrible loss of life. Tho third section of tho excursion train had stood on tho track a few hundred yards from Mud Run, waiting for tho sections ahead to get out of tho way. Tho flagman, some say, had been sent back with a lantern to guard tho train from tho rear. Suddenly tho passengers on the rear platform saw a train approach ing at a high rate of sju'ed. Several jumped and escaped. In au Instant the flash of a hoadllglit Illuminated tho Interior of tho Ill-fated rear oar. There was a frightful crash and tho engine plunged full length Into tho crowded mass of humanity. Tho shock drove the rear car through the next ono two-thirds of Its longth.
